mouse. He knew what to expect this time and began to relish the chewy meat.
âYouâll be an apprentice soon and then you can catch your own prey,â Plumclaw told him.
Catch my own prey! Tallkit wondered what tunnel-hunting was like. Chasing rabbits in the dark couldnât be as much fun as chasing rabbits on the moor. âDid you like being an apprentice?â he asked Plumclaw.
âIt was great.â Plumclaw tore another mouthful from her thrush.
Tallkit glanced at her from the corner of his eye. âWere you glad you were going to be a tunneler?â Could any cat be glad to be told they would spend their life underground?
âOf course!â Plumclaw shook a feather from her muzzle. âBoth my parents were tunnelers. And I knew Iâd be good at it because Iâm small, and my paws are wide and strong.â She held one up. Tallkit could see mud trapped beneath her claws even though the rest of her pelt was washed clean.
âDo you like being underground?â Tallkit tried to sound unconcerned. He didnât want her to guess he was having second thoughts about becoming a tunneler. What if she told Sandgorse?
âI love it,â she told him. âIt feels like a secret world. Above me, prey runs, warriors patrol, clouds move over the moor, and no one except my tunnelmates know where we are.â
âDonât you miss the wind in your pelt?â
âNo.â Plumclaw looked at him, surprised. âItâs snug underground. I feel safe with the earth pressing against my fur.â
Tallkit swallowed. âYou sound like youâre half mole!â
âMaybe I am.â As Plumclaw purred with amusement, Barkkit scrambled out of the Meeting Hollow. Tallkit sat up as his denmate bounced toward him.
âHeatherstar said yes!â Barkkit stopped in front of him. âI can be Hawkheartâs apprentice!â
âI didnât know you wanted to be a medicine apprentice,â Plumclaw purred. âCongratulations!â
âYeah.â Tallkit licked blood from his lips. âCongratulations.â He couldnât help feeling a pang of envy. Youâll be doing what you want while I spend all day digging holes.
âTallkit?â Barkkit was frowning at him. âWhatâs wrong?â
Tallkit lifted his chin. He wasnât being fair to his friend. âNothing. Iâm really happy for you!â
Barkkit noticed his mouse. âYouâre eating prey!â
Tallkit puffed out his fur proudly. âItâs good.â
âI like shrew best,â Barkkit told him. âIt tastes heathery.â He glanced over his shoulder at the grassy clearing. âDo you want to play Rabbit?â
Tallkit took a quick bite of mouse and pushed the rest toward Plumclaw. âHere.â
âThanks,â she meowed. âAre you sure youâve had enough?â
âPlenty.â Tallkit jumped to his paws. âShall I be rabbit this time?â he asked Barkkit.
Barkkit flicked his stubby tail. âYes.â
âOkay,â Tallkit mewed. âBut Iâm not hiding under any gorse bushes. Theyâre way too prickly.â
âDonât worry,â Barkkit reassured him. âIf you step on another thorn, I can always pull it out.â
C HAPTER 5
âLet all cats old enough to hunt gather at Tallrock.â Blue sky framed Heatherstar as she called from the top. Behind her, the distant moor rolled wide and green, rippling with heather not quite in bloom.
A soft breeze tugged at Tallkitâs pelt as he sat on the rim of the Meeting Hollow. His Clanmates swarmed around him, streaming down into the sandy dip. A warm newleaf had brought rich prey and now, as greenleaf set in, the Clanâs warriors were plump and sleek. Tallkit glanced at the tunnelers as they clustered at one end of the hollow. Woollytailâs eyes were bright and Hickorynose paced impatiently around him while Plumclawâs
