Jason Birchall zipped through his homework.
I have to tell someone my secret! he thought.
He didnât bother to check his spelling. He didnât even read over his work.
Jason was in such a big hurry. He slapped his name on the paper and pushed his homework into a folder.
Then he dashed outside.
It was still light, so he jumped on his bike.
His friends, Dunkum and Eric, werealready out riding. They zoomed up Blossom Hill Lane when they saw him. âHey, Jason!â they called. âWanna ride?â
âYou bet!â Jason said.
âDid you finish your homework already?â Dunkum asked. He was always talking school stuff.
âYa-hoo! Itâs done,â Jason hollered. âBut letâs not talk about that.â
He glanced around.
Was it safe?
He made his voice sound mysterious. âListen up, guys.â
Eric stared at Jason. âWhy are you talking like that?â Eric said.
âBecause,â said Jason.
âBecause why?â Dunkum asked.
âBecause Iâve got a secret,â Jason said.
âSo tell us,â Eric said. âIâm sure youâre dying to.â
Jason smiled. His friends knew him well. âOK, Iâll tell you. But you have to promise not to say one word to the girls.â
Dunkumâs face lit up. âYou can trust us. You know that.â
Eric agreed. âWe promise.â
Jason looked over his shoulder. âAre we really alone?â
Dunkum nodded. âItâs just us guys.â
âLetâs not take any chances,â Jason said. He motioned to Eric and Dunkum. And the three of them headed up the driveway. When they reached the garage door, Jason whispered, âIâm starting up a zoo.â
â Thatâs your secret?â Dunkum said.
âShh!â Jason peered around, checking for other Cul-de-sac Kids. âItâs top secret.â
âAre we talking a real zoo?â Eric asked.
Jason leaned a little closer. âYou heard right. June is Zoo Month, so Iâm starting a REAL zoo in my room.â
Eric scratched his head. âDoes your mom know about this?â
âMy parents think itâll be an adventure.â
âYou mean like a learning experience?â Dunkum said with a frown.
âThatâs exactly right.â Jason reached into his pocket. He unfolded a page out of the newspaper.
Eric leaned on his bike for a closer look. âWhatcha got?â
âCheck out my super-secret,â Jason said. He pointed to a picture of a big, hairy spider. âIâm gonna buy this tomorrow.â
Eric did a gulp. âIs . . . is that what I think it is?â
âItâs a tarantula, all right,â Jason said proudly.
âHey, let me see.â Dunkum grabbed the paper. âWhoa, Willie Millie! I can almost see Abby Hunterâs hair sticking straight up!â
Abby was the president of the Cul-de-sac Kids. Nine kids on one block. A really cool club.
Jason started jumping around. âStacy Henry will freak out, too. So will Dee Dee and Carly!â he chanted.
âWow, what a scary spider!â Eric said. âAre you buying him just to scare the girls?â
âShh! How can you say that?â Jason said. But he didnât stop grinning or hopping. He felt good all over. âItâs a pink-toed tarantula. And tomorrow heâs all mine!â
âI donât know about this,â Dunkum said. He studied the picture a little longer. âA tarantula might not be such a good idea.â
Jason pushed up his glasses. âWhat do you mean?â
âThey eat frogs, right?â asked Dunkum.
Jason started to laugh. âOh, I get it! Youâre thinking about Croaker. But you shouldnât be. My new pet will NOT be eating frogs.â
Jason knew exactly what to feed Pinktoes. His spider book told all about tarantulas. Everything he needed to know. There was even a chapter on how to handle
