surprise. What can I do for you?â
On her end, Patriceâs heart was beating rapidly. She was standing in the middle of her bedroom, having left Patrick and Nina in the kitchen so she would have a littleprivacy when she humiliated herself. She didnât believe T.K. was going to accept her invitation.
âHi,â she said softly. âIâm cooking, andâ¦â
âYou cook?â he asked, surprised.
âYes, Iâm making a Southwestern dish my mom used to make, and I realized that Iâm making enough to feed a small army. I was wondering if, you know, youâre not doing anything special tonight, if youâd like to come to dinner. I mean, Iâd understand if you canât make it, but I thought Iâd ask anyway.â
âIâd love to,â T.K. said immediately.
âMy brother and his wife are my guests for a few days,â Patrice warned. âTheyâll be here, too.â
âYour brother from Albuquerque?â asked T.K., sounding intrigued.
âYes, remember I told you Iâd left my car in Albuquerque? He and Nina, thatâs his wife, drove it here so I wouldnât have to go get it.â
âThat was nice of them,â T.K. said. âIâd love to meet them.â
âAre you sure?â Patrice hedged, offering him an out. There was still time for him to gracefully turn down her invitation.
T.K. laughed. âIâm beginning to think you donât want me to come.â
âNo, thatâs not it,â she denied. She lowered her voice, âItâs just that thereâs no telling how theyâre going to react when they see you. Theyâre big fans. I donât want you to feel like youâre an attraction at the zoo.â
âIâll bring the wineâred, white?â T.K. said with a chuckle.
âIâm making chicken enchiladas.â
âWhite, it is,â T.K. said. âAre you making the chicken enchiladas spicy?â
âIs there any other way?â Patrice joked.
âNot in my book. What time?â
âSeven,â Patrice told him. âSee you then.â
âYes, you will,â T.K. said, and hung up.
Patrice was smiling when she closed her cell phone. She wondered why she was so happy. It wasnât as if this was a date.
She walked back into the kitchen with her head lowered and a dejected expression on her face. Nina came to her and rubbed her arm sympathetically. âHe turned you down, huh?â
Patrice grinned as she raised her gaze to her sister-in-lawâs. âGotcha! Heâll be here at seven.â
Ninaâs mouth fell open in amazement, and she was speechless, a condition that until now had never befallen her. Patrick laughed and went to pull her into his arms. âI donât like this,â he said, peering into his wifeâs astonished face. He looked at Patrice. âDo you think sheâs okay?â He held Nina at armâs length and gently shook her. Nina was smiling, but she wasnât focusing.
Patrice laughed. âSheâll snap out of it when she realizes that heâll be here in less than three hours.â
Nina startled as if sheâd been poked with a cattle prod. âOh, I have to get ready. I need to shower and do myhair and makeup, and I didnât bring anything appropriate to wear. What was I thinking when I packed?â She turned her gaze on Patrice. âIâm gonna have to raid your closet.â
âYouâre welcome to it,â Patrice told her, still laughing softly. She calmly went back to preparing the meal.
Nina hurried from the kitchen presumably to start getting ready for T.K.âs arrival. Patrick followed mumbling, âI donât like this. I donât like it at all.â
âRemember,â Patrice said, âyou wanted to meet him, too.â
âYeah, but look at her,â Patrick complained. âShe wasnât this excited on our wedding
