to say Iâm sorry.â
Just so there was no confusion.
Her mom appeared. âThis is her?â
I repeated, âI came to apologize.â
âWell, isnât that big of you, Julie?â said Alyssaâs mom.
I made myself smile. âJuli- ah .â
Then I just waited for what was going to happen nextand started to wish that my mom had come with me.
âGo on, Lyss.â The mom elbowed her.
Alyssa said, âApology accepted.â
âGreat,â her mom said. âAnd I assume nothing like this will happen again or Iâll have to speak with your mother. Now why donât you two go play?â
Everything froze.
Thatâs it? I wanted to scream.
She nudged Alyssa out the door. When Alyssa took away the ice pack and handed it to her mom, the bruise on her cheekbone made me feel actually sorry for a minute. Then Alyssa said, âYouâre just mad because weâre better at Russia than you are.â
My fingertips burned. âWhat?â
It was ridiculous. I wasnât interested in their game. That didnât mean they were better at it than me. âI could totally beat you at Russia.â
She stood. âIs that a challenge?â
I shrugged like I owned it. âI guess it is.â
âWell, come on.â She went to a basket on the porch that had a few balls in it and grabbed two.
I said, âNot now .â
âWhy not now?â
âWe need a referee or something. Someone to make sure neither of us takes any shortcuts.â
She didnât look convinced, didnât want to give up herobvious advantage. Her game. Her balls. Her turf. Her day and hour.
âItâs only fair,â I said.
âOkay.â She thought for a minute. âSaturday afternoon. Thatâs all the time you get.â
âFine. Whatever.â
She said, âWeâll ask Taylor.â
âNo way,â I said. âPeter.â
âYour boyfriend? Nu-uh. Andrew.â
âFine.â
âWhat time?â
âI donât know. Iâll text you.â
âI donât have a phone.â
âOf course you donât. Letâs say noon.â Then, for a second, Alyssa studied me with what look liked genuine curiosity. âWhat were you and Peter doing in the woods anyway?â
âWatching End of Daze .â I felt boldânot only that Iâd done it but that I was telling someone. âIâm not allowed at home so weâve been sneaking off to watch, but you guys interrupted, so weâve only seen the first episode.â
âFascinating.â She crossed her arms.
âDid you watch episode two?â I felt my heart start to pump faster.
âYeah.â
âWho was on the other end of the phone? The momâs phone?â
âA man. He hung up. Mack thinks she must have been having an affair or something.â
âOh, jeez,â I said.
Alyssa still had a ball in her hand and tossed it back into the basket. âI think Archer is going to die this week.â
âNo way. They wouldnât do that.â
But Alyssa looked pretty confident.
âDo you think it could really happen?â I asked. âThe end of the world?â
âEventually, duh,â Alyssa said, unconcerned. âIâm going in the pool.â
I got up to leave and followed Alyssaâs gaze over to Taylorâs house, where I noticed the empty driveway. I remembered that Taylor had mentioned a doctorâs appointment and got an idea: I could hang out with Alyssa all morning without Taylor . Maybe weâd gotten off on the wrong foot. Maybe without Taylor there weâd find some common ground. I was fascinating! Sheâd said so!
I said, all casual-like, âYou want company?â
Alyssa stood there with a blank look on her face, and after what felt like a really, really, really long time, she said, âI guess.â
âOkay.â I worked hard not to look too excited.
