smoke?” Claire asked as I passed her tent. I waved her over to a workbench a few feet away and lit us each a cigarette. She took in a long drag and blew the smoke out slow and steady. “I needed that.” She whispered. I laughed and took this opportunity to get a better look at her. She had short black hair and I noticed her nose ring and smiled. “I used to have one of those.” I said. She looked at me curiously. “What?” She asked. I took a drag from the cigarette and pointed to her piercing. “I used to have one, I miss it.” I said. She covered her mouth and laughed. “Oh, well this is what happens when you have one to many shots.” She explained. I noticed her look back at her tent and I took a quick glance at her large breasts and torn jeans. I looked away quickly and scratched my head. “This place has a shower in the back of the shop; employees used it after long shifts of working with oil and dirt. The girls might like that.” I said. She turned back and looked at me. “Oh thank god, the girls and I will do that first thing in the morning.” She said. I offered her another smile, walked to the office door, and slowly opened it. “Thank you again for letting us stay.” Claire whispered from behind. I turned around and smiled at her. I closed the office door and lay down on my pallet I built; I fell asleep listening to the zombies rattle the gate and moan loudly.
Chapter Seven
I woke up before the sun broke over the horizon and suited up. I started the coffee pot on my desk and stepped out of the office. I walked quietly and unlocked the door to the zombie-filled world. I sat down on the stairs and starting smoking a cigarette. I looked at the groaning zombies and waved at them. Most of their skin was peeling off their faces from rubbing up against the fence through the night and the bones underneath were exposed. I started thinking about going on our next raid; we would need to hit up a large store for food, clothes and supplies too make this place feel more like home. We were not ready for the military base and couldn’t afford loosing anyone else. The door suddenly opened and it pulled me back from my thoughts. Ricky sat down beside me and handed me a cup of coffee. “Thanks.” Ricky took a sip of his coffee and looked at the zombie-covered gate. “Do you think they remember what life was once like?” He asked. I took a sip of my coffee and looked at him. “I doubt it man. It would be more like instinct.” I tossed my cigarette onto the ground and pulled out my handgun. “Can you believe we used to talk about the zombie apocalypse and now look at us? It’s like one big video game.” I said. Ricky looked down at my gun and smiled. “It’s just too bad we don’t have game cheats we can use.” He blurted out and we both started laughing. The door suddenly opened and Dennis stood in the doorway. “Can we talk to you guys?” He asked. Ricky and I got up and walked back in the shop. I noticed Dennis and Claire standing near her tent and I walked up to my office. “We can talk in here.” I said. We all went into the office and I sat behind the desk. Ricky pulled his bedding off the couch and offered them a seat. Ricky walked over to the coffee pot and poured each of them a cup. Dennis thanked Ricky and looked at me. “I know this is really not your problem but….” He got quite for a moment and Claire encouraged him to continue with a touch on his shoulder. “Well Claire has kids and I’m a pretty big guy, we need some real food. I just think we will end up eating all your supplies.” He said. “Our food,” I said. I stood in front of them and
