Kevin and Lissa.
âWhat are you doing here?â I asked.
âWe came to help you,â Kevin said. âWhere are you going?â
âIâm going to see Dr. Stone,â I said.
âWhereâs Fred?â Lissa asked, searching for Fred.
âIâmâIâm not taking Fred. Iâm going forâme.â
âYouâre going to a veterinarian!â Lissa cried. âThatâs ridiculous.â
âI donât know what else to do!â I shouted. âMomâs not home. Dadâs at lunch. I canât find the name of a regular doctor. And my blood is still blue!â I held up my hand and showed them the dried blue blood.
âNo way!â Kevin protested. âYou are not going to a vet. You are coming with us.â
âI am not going home with you!â I declared.
âSomething is wrong with you, Sam,â Lissa said. âAnd Aunt Sylvie will know what to do.â
âSheâs done enough!â I yelled.
âWhat if we sneak into her room and search through her stuff. See if we can find anything about a black-flake curse,â Kevin suggested, rolling his eyes.
I thought about that for a moment.
Maybe that made sense.
Maybe we could find a cure in her room for the curse.
Dr. Stone probably wouldnât know anything about the black-flake curse.
âOkay.â I gave in. âBut I donât want her to know Iâm there. We have to sneak into the house.â
Kevin and Lissa agreed.
As we walked along Fear Street, I noticed a tall maple tree a few houses from the cornerâin the Knowltonsâ front yard.
Iâd never seen such a tall tree before. Its branches towered over all the houses around it.
âHow long has that tree been there?â I asked.
âProbably about a million years,â Lissa said.
I stared up at the tree. At its red and gold leavesas they floated to the ground. âI wonder why I never noticed it before.â
âWhy would anyone notice a maple tree?â Kevin said. âThey all look alike.â
âHow could you miss that tree?â Lissa declared. âIt must be thirty feet tall.â
I stopped at the Knowltonsâ gate. I pushed it open and walked into their front yard. I gazed down at the ground.
âSam, what are you staring at?â Kevin asked.
âThe leaves,â I replied. âThey look so delicious.â
I sank to my kneesâand began stuffing the red and gold leaves into my mouth.
I grabbed handful after handful from the ground. I stuffed my mouth full with leaves. They tasted drier than sand, but I couldnât stop.
âSam!â Kevin shouted. âGet up!â
âWe have to stop him, Kevin,â Lissa wailed. âWe have to do something!â
Kevin and Lissa each grabbed one of my arms. They tried to tug me away from the leaves.
âLet me go!â I shouted. âI have to eat these leaves!â
Lissa grabbed my head in one of her karate holds and yanked me back.
âPlease, just one more leaf,â I begged. âJust one more.â
âDonât believe him, Lissa,â Kevin shouted. âIâve seen him eat paste. Once he starts, he canât stop. If you let him go, heâll eat every tree on Fear Street!â
Lissa and Kevin dragged me back to the sidewalk.
I took a deep breath.
âThanks. Iâm okay now,â I told them.
âBoy, you really do need help,â Lissa said, shaking her head. âThat was disgusting, Sam. Really disgusting.â
I picked a leaf out from between my teeth. âI know,â I moaned.
We walked a few stepsâright by my front door.
I thought about Aunt Sylvie.
About her mocking laugh. Her evil chant.
I decided to go home.
âOh, no, you donât.â Kevin pulled me back. âWeâre going to my house, remember?â
Kevin tugged me past my house. We walked by Mrs. Kowalskiâs front lawnâand I took a dive. Right
