settlements,â Kelly said. âCome on in. Jordanâs still at the office, but he should be home soon.â
His sister-in-law surveyed him closely. âHow are you? You look lousy.â
âObviously Dani isnât the only one in the family with a silver tongue.â
Kelly didnât bat an eye. âDid you see Melissa today?â
âIâm sure you know perfectly well that your husband and Luke badgered me into it.â
âThey said they were going to try. I wasnât sure if it had worked.â
âI saw her,â he admitted. âAnd her baby.â He watched closely for Kellyâs reaction. She remained expressionless.
âI see,â she said blandly, keeping her attention focused on the vegetables she was chopping. âHow did it go?â
Cody thought she was working awfully darned hard to feign disinterest. âFine for the first few minutes, ugly after that.â
âOh, Cody,â she protested softly. âIsnât it time you settled things with her and came home for good?â
Suddenly he didnât want to pursue the topic. He needed a break from it. They could get into it again when Jordan got home. Hopefully his brother would have answers that Kelly couldnât or wouldnât give him.
âI donât want to talk about Melissa right now. First I want to catch a glimpse of that brand new baby boy of yours,â he declared just as Jordan came in and dropped a kiss on his wifeâs cheek.
âHey, little brother, what brings you by?â Jordan asked, sneaking a carrot from the pile Kelly had just cut up.
âHeâs going to take a kitten,â Dani chimed in. âCan we go see them now, Cody? Itâs later.â
Since going to see the kittens would keep him from having to deal with the subject of Melissa and her baby a little longer, Cody stood and headed for the kitchen door. Dani tucked her hand in his.
âYou should probably take two kittens,â she said on the way out. âOne might get lonely.â
âListen, young lady, I said one kitten,â he protested over the sound of Kelly and Jordanâs laughter.
âBut you were going to take two last time.â Apparently she caught his stern expression because she gave a little shrug of resignation. âI bet youâll change your mind when you see them.â
A half hour later he was back in the kitchen with two kittens in a box. Dani had been giving him very precise instructions on caring for them ever since theyâd left the barn. Kellyâs expression turned smug when she saw him.
âYou are pitiful,â Jordan said, shaking his head. âIs there a female on the face of the earth you can resist?â
âWho are you kidding?â Cody shot back, gesturing to the big tomcat that was curled in Jordanâs lap purring contentedly. âYou always hated cats and nowyouâre surrounded by them. I donât hear you complaining.â
âYou may not hear it,â Kelly said, âbut it is almost the last thing I hear every single night. He says âGood night, I love you, no more cats,â all in one breath.â
âI do not,â Jordan said, dislodging the cat and pulling Kelly onto his lap.
Cody listened to their banter and watched their undisguised affection with envy. Until heâd lost Melissa heâd never thought he wanted marriage and kids. Heâd been as commitment-phobic as any one of those jerks who made the rounds of the talk shows. Ironically, ever since their breakup, all heâd been able to think about was settling down and having kids. Heâd deliberately isolated himself in Wyoming so heâd be far from the temptation to try something at which he knew heâd inevitably fail.
After all, he hadnât appreciated Melissa when heâd had her and she was as sexy and generous, as kind and intelligent, as any woman heâd ever known. Heâd had a roving eye,
