to his room.
The day had been perfect so far. Now, standing outside his door with the wine and glasses in hand, she began to question how it would end. She hadn’t realized how much she had come to care for Jack until the day passed with no word from him. Her heart had only been broken once, but the pain of it was something she would never forget. Saying good-bye to Jack was going to hurt, but she was determined not to cry until after he was gone. With a deep breath, she summoned her courage and knocked lightly.
Jack opened the door and stood before her in a pair of faded jeans and nothing else. Lord, but the man had a body made to tempt saints. A six-pack she could wash clothes on. Biceps so big both her hands couldn’t wrap around them. The man was sex on a stick, no doubt about it.
Kayla gave him a shy smile and held up the bottle. “Care for a glass?”
He didn’t say a word, just held the door open for her and motioned her inside with a nod. She walked to the small table in front of the windows, poured them both a glass of the rich red wine, and held his glass out to him. He closed the door and gazed at her from across the room. “You trying to get me drunk so you can ravage me?”
“Do you need to be drunk?”
“Hell, no.” He accepted the wine and resumed his position. “You can ravage me anytime you want.”
“I didn’t see you around today.” Kayla watched him as he leaned against the wall near the door. He was sexy as hell.
“I had some things to take care of down in Denver.” He walked across the room and set the glass down on the table beside her.
“Oh. Business?” Shit, he smelled good.
The corded muscles of his arms bulged as he crossed them over his chest. “Why did you come here tonight, Kayla?” His eyes roamed over her body.
A shiver of excitement raced down her spine. “Because I wanted to spend time with you.”
“Oh, yeah?” He quirked a brow. “And just how would you like to spend the time?”
She traced a path down his abs to the waistband of his jeans. “On my back. On my knees. I’m not real picky as long as we’re both naked.”
“What if I want to talk?”
“Talk?” She fingered the stiff ridge of his cock through the denim. “I think you want to do more than that.”
“Definitely, but right now I want you to talk to me.” Jack unfolded his arms from across his chest and cupped her face in his hands. His eyes were dark with lust and something more she couldn’t quite name.
“I don’t know what you want me to say,” she whispered.
Jack closed the distance between them and brushed his lips across hers softly. “Whatever is on your mind.” His fingers trailed along her jaw. “Maybe I want you to tell me you don’t want me to leave.”
He pressed her back against the wall and placed an arm on either side of her, effectively trapping her. “There’s nothing wrong with saying it, Kayla,” he murmured in her ear.
Heat coiled low in her stomach as his warm breath caressed her skin. Heaven knew she wanted him. She wanted him more than sex. So much more. She did want him to stay, but she couldn’t find the courage to say the words.
“Don’t think about it, just say it.” His teeth closed around her earlobe and tugged ever so gently, causing her heart rate to triple. “Tell me what you’re thinking.”
She closed her eyes against the prickle of tears. “I can’t.” But, God, how she wanted to. She wanted to scream it for the entire world to hear.
His tongue scorched a heated trail down the column of her neck. “Why not? What are you afraid of?” He nipped at the patch of skin where her neck and shoulder met. She moaned softly.
“You’re leaving day after tomorrow,” she said breathlessly. Her knees felt like jelly as he gently nipped her again.
“I know you don’t want me to. I saw it in your eyes the other night in front of your cabin, and again last night in the hot tub.” He shifted slightly to her other side and whispered,
