doorway when they arrived. But one look at their faces made his smile fade.
âDarren, whatâs wrong?â Ray asked.
âI . . . ,â Darren began, panting. He bent over with his hands on his knees as he tried to catch his breath.
âHi, Iâm Ray,â Ray introduced himself to Fiona. His forehead was creased with worry. âAre you two okay?â
Fiona swallowed hard. âYeah. We were working on our book reports and weâwe kind of got lost,â she said, thinking fast. âBut Darren recognized your dorm, so, uh, itâs all good now. Iâm Fiona, by the way.â
Rayâs face relaxed. âOh, good. You had me worried for a minute,â he replied. âAre you seriously winded from the stairs?â
âYeah,â Darren said, laughing nervously. âSorryâIwas completely turned around. I couldnât even find the cafeteria.â
Ray laughed loudly. âNow thatâs hard to believe,â he joked. âI have to go meet my study group. Want me to show you where to get some lunch?â
Fiona and Darren exchanged a glance. On the one hand, theyâd probably be safer with Ray to escort them around campus . . . but then again, what could Ray do to protect them against three warlocks?
âActually, can we hang out here for a while?â Darren asked.
âYou donât even have to ask,â Ray said, flashing a smile. âText me if you need anything. Iâll be down at the library.â
Darren forced himself to return Rayâs smile as he remembered the terror heâd felt, being chased by the warlocks among the stacks of books. âThanks, bro. Iâll see you soon.â
âFamily dinner next weekend,â Ray reminded him. âYou make sure Dadâs there; Iâll make Mom drive me home. Nice to meet you, Fiona. You two stay out of trouble now.â
Then Ray grabbed his backpack and left. Neither Darren nor Fiona spoke until the door had closed behind him.
âEasier said than done,â Fiona blurted out.
Darren looked at her, confused. âWhat?â he asked.
âStaying out of trouble,â she explained. âItâs easier said than done. Those guys . . . They wereââ
âMagic,â Darren finished for her.
Fiona reached into her backpack for the book, which was nestled in the soft folds of her selkie cloak. Then she paused. âDoes Ray have a roommate?â she asked.
Darren shook his head. âThis is a single room,â he said. âItâs safe.â
With extreme caution, Fiona brought the ancient book out of her backpack. Then she laughed suddenly, making Darren jump.
âWhat is it?â he asked.
Fiona held up her gloved hands. âI just realized Iâm still wearing these!â
Darren watched over Fionaâs shoulder as she placed the book on Rayâs desk. When she opened it, her hand hovered over the wordsâand once again, theyrearranged themselves, moving around the page like fallen leaves scattered by a gust of wind. When they settled again, the text was clear:
Circeâs Compasse
Useful in the Search for Changers, Circeâs Compasse was closely held by the Bonekamp Family until the Time of the Dark, when it was Lost amid the carnage. Some 400 years later, it Resurfaced during the reign of Ilyana the Conqueror. In Recognition of the extreme Power and Usefulness of Circeâs Compasse, it was secreted away in the Year 1792, secured in a Magic Chest on the Seafarer , a ship bound for the Americas. Alas, a storm claimed the ship, its crew, and cargo near the coast of the settlement at Middletown.
Fionaâs white-gloved finger trembled as she pointed to the word âMiddletown.â âDarren!â she breathed. âMiddletown is right next to Willow Cove!â
âI donât know,â he replied, still staring at the text.âThere are lots of Middletowns. Thereâs a
