all that necessary?â
âThink of it as a fashion statement.â
Caroline touched a cut on Jackâs lip.
âThis might need special treatment,â she said.
She ran her fingers over Jackâs mouth. Closed her eyes and leaned forward to kiss Jack, who, taking a deep breath, pulled back.
âYouâre a good nurse,â he said.
âDoctor,â she said.
âYou practice a lot?â
âI donât have a lot of patience.â
âWhich kind?â Jack asked.
Caroline kissed Jack again.
âI can tell you donât have a lot of patience,â Jack said. âDid I tell you I can read minds?â
âYeah?â
âYouâre going to say, Iâm not going to help you get killed .â
âAnd youâre going to say, If they wanted to kill me, youâd be in mourning by now .â
âAnd youâre going to say, Letâs leave all this to the cops. â
âAnd youâre going to say, Go back into Frankâs files, everything from the past six months, everything. â
âWe know each other so well,â Jack said, âmaybe someday we ought to go on a date.â
âI donât date corpses,â Caroline said.
âWhy not?â Jack said. âYou know what they say about necrophilia? At least, you donât have to worry about hurting your partnerâs feelings .â
Caroline closed the first aid kid. Angrily.
âI thought you wanted me to find out what happened to Frank.â
âThat was before this.â
âThey stole my jobââ Jack began.
âThey?â Caroline asked.
âI worked hard to get where I am,â Jack said.
âWhere are you, Jack?â Caroline asked.
âBack where I began,â Jack said. âThatâs what I mean. If it hadnât been for Frankâs murderââ
âYou donât know he was murdered,â Caroline said. âAs for screwing up your lifeâif it hadnât been Frankâs death, it would have been something else.â
âMy fate, huh?â
âYour character. They pulled you in for obstructing justice. Resisting arrest. Itâs amazing you werenât disbarred years ago.â
âSo my fateâs this car heading at meââ
âAnd your character is you being so stubborn you decide to play chicken when the driver of the car has had a stroke and canât turn the wheel away. You think heâs trying to prove heâs more macho than you, Jack. But heâs dead. And youâd rather crash than get out of a dead manâs way.â
âBut if he was aliveâ¦â
âYouâd still be a fool to play chicken,â Caroline said.
She grabbed her bag and headed for the door.
âAt least,â Jack said, âwe now got a clue.â
âWhat are you talking about?â Caroline asked.
Gingerly, Jack touched a bruise and said, âWhoever hit me was a professional.â
Caroline slammed out.

Caroline balanced a doubled cardboard coffee cup, which splashed hot coffee onto her knuckles as she crossed the square in front of the Mycenae County Courthouse. Thrusting out his chin so he wouldnât drip on himself, Robert took a sip from his cardboard cup.
âSmart move,â Robert said, âcutting free of Jack. That relationship wasnât going anywhere.â
âDonât get me started,â Caroline said.
âDoes he have any idea whoâs trying to scare him off?â
Caroline shook her head no , took a careful sip of coffee.
âJackâs going to destroy himself,â she said.
They passed a stranger slamming his fist against one of the last public pay phones in town.
âYou see that, chief?â the stranger said to Robert. âI work hard for my money, and the goddamn phone stole my quarter!â
The stranger kept hitting the telephone. Caroline and Robert walked on. Robert shaking his head.
