thisâ¦this nice-looking man whoâd checked in. It turned out to be Jake.â
Philip stared at her. âThat must have been a terrible shock.â
Maggie gave a short, mirthless laugh. âThatâs putting it mildly. Iâve been off balance ever since it happened. Which is odd, since my relationship with him was over long ago. I canât figure out why his reappearance has disturbed me so much.â
Philip studied her for a moment. âIt does seem strange. After all, whatever you two shared is history, right?â
âRight.â
âAnd it isnât as if he even means anything to you anymore, right?â
âRight.â A hint of uncertainty crept into her voice.
âWhat was he doing here, anyway?â
âHeâs interviewing for a job at the Maritime Academy.â
âYou mean he might move up here?â
âYes. And that makes me even more nervous. Which is ridiculous, because weâre no more than strangers to each other now.â
âItâs probably just the shock of seeing him.âPhilip took a sip of his iced tea. âWhere has he lived all these years?â
âAll over, I guess. Heâs been in the navy. I think he still would be if it wasnât for his father.â Maggie gave him a short version of the story.
âHmm.â That was his only comment when she finished.
Maggie sent him a quizzical look. âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
He lifted one shoulder. âI guess Iâm a little surprised. And impressed. Not many people would give up their career, start over, change their whole life to keep a promise made under duress. He sounds like an honorable man.â
Maggie frowned. âYes, he does. And itâs so at odds with the image Iâve had of him all these years.â
âPeople do change.â
âI suppose so. I just wish I didnât feel so off balance.â
âThings will work out. They always do. Youâve successfully weathered a lot of storms through the years, and youâll ride this one out, too. I know. And Iâm always here if you need a sympathetic ear. Donât forget that.â He touched her hand lightly and smiled, then switched gears. âIn the meantimeâ¦when do I get a preview of the new painting?â
âWill next week be okay?â
âPerfect. Iâll reserve a spot right near the front for it. You know, you have a large enough body of work now to consider your own show.â
Maggie grimaced. âI just donât feelâ¦wellâ¦good enoughâ¦to have an official show.â
âWhy donât you let me be the judge of that? Besides, youâll never know till you try. Itâs not like you to back off from a challenge.â
âI know. But my painting is soâ¦personal. If I got bad reviews it would be devastating. Iâm not sure Iâm ready to face that.â
âFirst of all, they wouldnât be bad. And second of all, you can face anything, Maggie Fitzgerald. Because you are one of the strongest women I know.â
Maggie wanted to believe him. As recently as yesterday she might have. But a lot had happened since then. And at this particular moment, she didnât feel very strong at allâthanks to one very unforgettable man named Jake West.
Â
âJake called twice. Will call again tomorrow.â
Maggieâs heart leapt to her throat as she read the note on the kitchen counter. She should have figured heâd call while she was out. She hoped the girls had explained where she was. She didnât want him to think she was trying to avoid him. It was just that she led a very busy life. Her daysâand eveningsâwere filled. Like tonight. The zoningboard meeting had run far later than she expected because of some heated discussion. And she still had a few breakfast preparations to make, even if it wasâshe glanced at her watch and groanedâten-thirty. There always
