branch needs to be cut back. As you can see, itâs creating a problem. If we donât do something about it, the fence will need to be repaired or replaced. But we canât cut it without the neighborâs permission. Do you know the people who live there?â
âI just met her,â Amy said. âHer name is Maria. And I donât think sheâll mind. Do you want me to talk to her about it?â
âIâll do it. Weâve got a release form Iâd like for her to sign.â Eddie stepped closer to the fence and peered into Mariaâs yard, checking out the tree that was causing the problem.
Amy couldnât imagine Maria having a problem with Eddie trimming her tree. After all, the fence was already starting to bow from the weight.
âBy the way,â Eddie added, âthe sprinkling system is shot. Iâm not sure if Mr. Davila will want to go to the expense of tearing it out and replacing it. If not, youâll have to water the old-fashioned way.â
Itâs not that Amy didnât like yard work, but sheâd committed to a lot more than sheâd planned already. And while sheâd defend her actions to Brandon, she was getting drawn deeper and deeper into something she hadnât thought completely through when sheâd leased the house.
âWell, I guess thatâs it for now.â Eddie stepped away from the fence and turned, ready to head back to the front yard. âI donât want to keep you from your work or your company.â
âHeâs not exactly company,â she said as they walked. âBut while youâre here, can I ask you something?â
âShoot.â
âDo you know anything about rosebushes?â
âQuite a bit. Why?â
âLike I mentioned earlier, the woman who lived here had a rose garden in back. Itâs a scraggly mess now, but she clearly used to love it and care for it.â
âIâd planned to trim and weed around it.â
That wasnât exactly what she meant. âIâm not sure how much work the Davilas want you to do, but Iâd be happy to pay you extra to get those bushes healthy once more. It just seems thatâ¦â What? she asked herself. That she somehow owed it to Ellie Rucker to put things back to rights? ââ¦well, letâs just say Iâd like to see the roses bloom the way they should.â
âYou got it,â Eddie said as they returned to the front yard, where Brandon and Callie waited. âIâll get some numbers to the Davilas, and weâll take it from there.â
Amy nodded as Eddie headed toward his pickup.
When she returned her attention to Brandon, she said, âWhy donât I give you a call on your cell? I think itâs better if we talk privately about this.â
âI donât like not knowing what youâre up to,â Brandon said as he placed a hand on Callieâs shoulder.
âIâm not âup toâ anything. Thereâs a perfectly good explanation.â Well, he might not consider it a good one. But Amy wasnât moving to Fairbrook. And she wasnât dating anyone.
âArenât you going with us?â Callie asked.
âNot today, honey. Iâm afraid I canât. But have fun.â
âShould I bring her back here?â Brandon asked.
âNo.â Amy would have to figure out a Plan B, whatever that might be. âTell me what time youâll have her home, and Iâll be there.â
âHow about two?â he asked.
She nodded, thinking sheâd better get busy if she wanted to get any workâor any snoopingâdone.

Brandon drove his black late-model Mercedes through the traffic on his way to Chuck E. Cheeseâs, a place heâd only been to once and hadnât appreciated as much as everyone else seemed to. He preferred to eat at restaurants that didnât cater to kids.
