think the ghost is up in the lighthouse. I think thereâs only one ghost. Remember that howling we heard? And there was no way that searchlight could have come on by itself.â
Adam went on to explain his theory that the boat had crashed because the captain had been drunk, not because the searchlight was off. Watch thought that made sense. But he wanted to bring the skeleton with them anyway.
âWhy?â Adam asked.
âBecause you never know,â Watch said. âThe ghost in the lighthouse might want to talk to it.â
Adam snickered. âSkeletons canât talk.â
âYeah, and ghosts arenât supposed to exist. Donât forget where youâre living. I wouldnât be surprised if the skeleton and the ghost got in a big argument. It wonât be the first time thatâs happened around here.â
Adam yawned. âWe can take it with us if you want. If nothing else, we can give it to Mr. Spiney.â Hepointed to Watchâs air tank. âDid you bring me an extra tank?â
âNo. But you donât need it. We can buddy breathe.â
âIs that dangerous?â Adam asked.
âNot if just two people are doing it together.â Watch glanced again at the skeleton. âI donât think he needs any air.â

S ally and Cindy were overjoyed to see Adam alive. Adam was surprised at how glad they were. They both had tears in their eyes as he climbed onto the rocks, although Sally quickly brushed hers away. Adam felt pleased to know he would have been missed if heâd died. This hero business did have its rewards. Not that he wanted another kiss or anything gross like that.
âIf it wasnât for me, you would still be down there with the fish,â Sally said. âI was the one who figuredout where you were. I never lost hope, even as Cindy and Watch were planning your funeral.â
âThatâs not true,â Cindy said. âIn my heart I knew Adam would pull through.â
âYeah, thatâs why you picked out a tank of laughing gas instead of air,â Sally said.
Cindy was insulted. âYou chose a tank with a skull and crossbones on it.â
âSpeaking of bones,â Watch said, with Captain Pillar in tow. âThis is what Adam found in the ship. Donât worry, Cindy, itâs not your brother.â
âI can see that,â Cindy said, looking a little sick. The skeleton was draped with seaweed, and there was a tiny crab crawling out of one of its eye sockets. âThere was no sign of my brother?â Cindy asked quietly.
âNo,â Adam said. âBut I think weâve been chasing after the wrong ghost. We have to search the lighthouse again.â
âBut we already searched it,â Sally protested. âNeil wasnât inside. I wouldââ
âBet my reputation on it,â Watch finished for her.
âWe hardly searched the place before leaving,â Adam said. âWhat if the top floor had an attic above it?â
Watch nodded as he stared up at the top of the lighthouse. âThere could be a tiny room above the searchlight. At least it looks that way from here.â Watch shivered. âBut itâs getting late and Iâm hungry. Maybe we should try to save Neil tomorrow, after a warm meal and a good nightâs sleep.â
Cindy was agitated. âBut you really think my brother might be stuck in there with an evil ghost?â she asked Adam. âIf itâs true, I canât leave him there another night.â
âFor all we know the ghost might be enjoyable company,â Watch said. âRemember Casper. He wasnât a bad fellow.â
âHe was a whiner,â Sally disagreed. âHe was always complaining about being dead. He should have had to live in Spooksville for a few weeks, see what we go through. Then he would have stopped his moaning.â
Adam shook his head. âWe have to go back inside the lighthouse and
