door.  Gloria didn’t hesitate to start in.
She put her eyes down on the clipboard. “The maitre‘d needs five hundred ‘cause he has no product.  The cook wants to know if he can borrow three hundred ‘til payday next week.  The room service lady needs to know if you can get her immigration papers.  It would be better to give one bellboy a hundred a week so he can be your personal errand boy.”  She checked her list and then smiled. “Well, that’s it.  Oh, and I need to get laid.”
My head pounded.  I didn’t know what I had gotten myself into.  What I did know was that I had an agenda to reach, and sex was not on the list.
“What I need is a bigger suite with two rooms.  Bottles of vitamins B, C, Multi, E, Garlic, and sleeping pills.  A lot of sleeping pills.  I need healthy meals with nutrients and protein delivered three times a day.  A bunch of feminine products for two women, security taken care of, and you can get laid tomorrow.  I had a rough night.”
She wrote all the things I needed on the pad. “Two large will cover that.  I’ll pick up the money from the workers when they get paid, and believe me, I’ll be at your new Bed & Sitter suite bright and early in the morning.”  She bent down for my dirty clothes. “I’m going to get your bellboy to come up with the vitamins.  I’ll take all these to the laundry while I get the food.”  She reached in my pockets to empty them and pulled out a piece of paper. “What’s this?”
I looked up; the paper ball with the two tennis bracelets was in her hand.
“Hand that over.  It belongs to somebody.”
“Sure wish somebody cared about me that much,” she said and the light bulb went off in my head.
I slipped the bracelets into the pocket of my robe, and handed her the two grand.  While stopping her from leaving out of the suite, I said, “Gloria.  I’ma tell you this once.  I’m not Brave Dave with Crack frying my brain.  You gonna hustle, then hustle, and we have a great understanding.  If you want to hustle for me, then everything changes and you will be blessed.  Nothing comes from nothing, so never try to bullshit a bullshitter.”
She acknowledged my words.  On her way out the door with the money in her hand, she replied, “I’m gonna take care of everything right now, Johnny Hustle.  Just let me do what I have to do.  I’ll let you know which suite to move into in a minute.  I hear you loud and clear.”
The door closed.  I was so exhausted that I lay next to Red and closed my eyes.

Knocking awoke me.  Room service, along with the bellboy stood at my door with a bag from the Duane Read pharmacy.
The young White man with the food on the cart said, “Sir, I’ve been informed that you have been upgraded.  You’ll be moving one floor up to the Bed & Sitter suite.  I didn’t know if you wanted to eat now or in your new suite, so I brought the food to be on the safe side.”
The bellboy handed me the bag from the pharmacy. “If you want to move now, my cart is at the end of the hall.  We can move everything one floor up.”
I stood in my robe, thought about the change, and told the men that I wanted the food delivered to the new suite.
While one went to get the cart and the other went to the new suite, I grabbed the cosmetics case.  I grabbed Roxy’s cash off the table and tried to wake Red, but it was useless.  The bellboy came back with his cart and gathered up all of me and Roxy’s things.  When the cart was full, my clothes trunk and the new case was placed on the bottom. I then asked the bellboy “How strong are you?”
“Mucho, mucho strong, amigo,” he replied, smiling with much enthusiasm.
I nodded, walked him into the bedroom, and pointed to Red.  He was confused at first, but then I told him to wrap her in a blanket.  I then gave instructions to put her over his shoulder and carry her to the new suite while I followed with the cart.  Once again, New York
