remember?â
âJordan,â he spoke loudly, âif thatâs really your name â â
âBen,â she scolded, trying to defuse him.
âI know youâre not traveling under the name Jordan Jakes.â
âWho told you that?â
âDoes it matter?â
âYeah, it does matter. I want to know whoâs filling your head with lies.â
His chest visibly tightened. âAre you Jordan Jakes?â
âOf course I am, where did you get the idea I wasnât?â She spoke harshly.
âThe attendant for Lufthansa told me you had a different name. She didnât want to, but then â â He stopped suddenly.
Diving in, Jordan said flat out, âItâs not safe for you to enter Iran. I donât want to see you get hurt.â
Not listening to her, he said, âI want to meet your family.â
âYou canât,â she said.
âAre you married, Jordan? Should I call you Jordan?â The intensity in his voice was rising. âAnd just what name are you traveling under? Tell me that?â
Lowering her voice to calm him, she saw the hurt inside of him; emotionally, he was bleeding to death. âBen, itâs still me, Iâm still Jordan. And, yes, Iâm sorry to tell you this, but I
am
married,â she said because it was as good an excuse as any other, and if this was what he needed to leave once and for all, then all the better.
âI donât believe you,â he stammered. âYouâre not married.â
âI should have told you,â she said sympathetically.
âYouâre just trying to get rid of me. Youâre not married, your body told me that when we made love. Remember that?â
âPlease, Ben. Just go back home.â
âNo. You havenât answered my questions. And Iâve come a long way to get answers. Like why you really left me.â
âBen.â
âWho are you?â he pushed.
The only answer she gave was her silence.
âI deserve an answer,â he said. âYou owe me that.â
âNobody owes anyone anything.â She paused. âIt was fun while it lasted. We had fun.â
âIt was more than fun. What we had was great. More than great. Or did you forget that already?â
More silence.
âAre you hearing me?â
She stood her ground.
âIt was great for me. And Iâm person enough to admit the truth, even if you wonât,â he said.
A family of six pushed between them. The father bumped into Ben. Unaffected, Ben stood firm, staring into Jordanâs face. âIâll go on one condition,â he finally said.
âWhat?â
âYou answer one question.â
Somehow she knew he would stand there forever until she agreed to his demand. But she had a flight to catch. âAsk it,â she said, hoping this painful experience would just end.
âTell me honestly,â he said. âDo you love me?â
It wasnât the question sheâd expected. She figured he would go back to the âwho are youâ question. Although with him showing up in Germany like this â desperate and heartbroken â his question wasnât terribly farfetched. In fact, it was the perfect question for her to answer, truth aside, if it would keep him off the plane.
So, taking her time to bolster her response and let the impact hit him hard, she stared into his eyes until the branch broke.
âNo.â
Chapter 5
Ben had come a long way to hear that âno,â but at least now he could move on and close another unsuccessful chapter in his life. Without goodbye, a kiss, or another word, Jordan simply turned and left him standing there, drowning in a pool of pity.
All he could do was stand there and watch as the gap between Jordan and himself grew more and more distant. When Jordan was no longer in his line of sight, he turned and looked into a faceless crowd. All the travelers seemed to know where
