ludicrous like that.
Is that ludicrous?
Yes, of course it is.
âNo big deal,â I add, squeezing Benâs hand under the table and watching Danielle to see her reaction. I canât fool my best mate â sheâll know itâs a massive deal.
âOf course itâs a big deal,â says Jamie, patting Benâs shoulder then mine. âYou can have those drinks on the house.â
âYou were going to charge us for these?â asks Ben.
âThank goodness for that,â Danielle says to no one in particular. âWhen she texted saying the house hunt was horrendous, I was worried Iâd be stuck with her for ever.â Then to me: âNice one, Becs. So will you stay in the flat?â
âWe havenât really discussed it,â I admit, looking at Ben.
âYeah,â he agrees. âThis is pretty much breaking news you walked into. Might make sense until I can save a bit more towards a deposit.â
âWill Russ and Tom mind?â I ask.
âNah, it was just the two of them there before I moved in â they were doing me a favour, to be honest. I can move in as soon as Danielle can get out.â
âNo need to sound so excited about it,â says Danielle, giving Ben a shove. âBut I can move any time. Next weekend if you want?â
âThatâd be perfect,â I say, then seeing Danielle pout, add: âI mean, thatâll be really sad.â
âI want tears!â
âIâll be crying on the inside,â I promise.
âLetâs do that, then,â says Ben, clapping his hands together. âThatâs just before our anniversary.â
âHeâs taking me away on a surprise,â I tell the others, before turning to Ben, whoâs still grinning. I grin back.
âDo you have seven hundred pounds to give Danielle for her deposit?â I ask.
âYeah.â He lowers his voice. âWeâll also need a new dining table.â
âDefinitely.â I chuckle. âAnd a new sofa, come to think of it â thatâs Danielleâs too.â
âAnd a new bed.â He turns to the others, looking smug. âThe springs have gone on Rebeccaâs old one.â
âYep, it never really recovered from my student days,â I say, trying not to smile.
Jamie pats Benâs back sympathetically. âAnd on that note, Iâll get back to work.â
Thereâs a gaggle of giggling girls waiting for him at the bar. Heâs still chatting to one of them when Ben and I finish our drinks and Ben gets up to replenish them. âSame again?â
âPlease,â I reply.
âWhile youâre there,â Danielle yells at Benâs retreating back, âtell Jamie to stop flirting with Tidy Tania and make my bloody Mojito.â
She moves up into the space Ben has just vacated to sit next to me.
âHas Tidy Tania still got a boyfriend?â I wonder aloud.
âYep.â
âThatâs a shame.â
âIt is, but anyway . . . I canât believe youâre moving in with a boy.â Her tone is disapproving but her smile tells me sheâs teasing.
âWe lived with Jamie for years,â I remind her.
âYou know what I mean. A
boy
boy.â I do know what she means. âAre you scared?â
âNah, Iâm excited. Itâs Ben. Itâll be easy.â
âHow do you know Benâs The One?â
Itâs not a question I was expecting, and I nearly shrug and say
I donât know
, or quip that Iâm still deciding whether he is or not. But something about Danielleâs tone and the sad way she keeps glancing at her mobile on the table makes me reconsider. Sheâs opening up. We donât do it often â not because we donât trust each other, just because we donât feel the need to. But if sheâs showing me her vulnerable side, Iâll show her mine.
âAnd donât be a prick and say,
You just
