Run away. Nobodyâs going to run away . You been watching too many Shirley Temple movies. Weâre just going to take off, split.â She glanced at the door to see if Mrs. Mason was within hearing, then she turned back to Harvey. âYou know, it really isnât a bad idea, Harvey. I couldnât go home because theyâd pick me right up, but this farm â¦â
âNo.â
âWhy not?â
âFor one thing, I am in a wheelchair in case you havenât noticed.â
âListen, the wheelchair would make it easier. It makes you look pitiful. Nobody would turn us down for a ride. I could step out and thumb and you could hold up a sign that saidââ
âI couldnât do it.â
âHarvey, you could . Listenââ
âI donât want to talk about it.â
âButââ
âI donât want to talk about it!â
âAll right, all right, we wonât talk about it. You donât have to jump down my throat.â She paused, then said, âAnything interesting in your lists lately?â
âWhat?â
âYour lists. Anything interesting?â
âOh, no.â Harveyâs eyes were on the street. His father would have to come over the crest of the hill.
âWhatâs your latest list about?â
âWhat? Oh.â Harvey touched his forehead. He was too nervous to remember. He said, âOh, I donât know. Letâs see. Oh, yeah, it was just something I read that interested me, nothing important.â
âWhat?â
âI read somewhere that one day everybody will be famous for fifteen minutes.â
âWhoo, if thatâs true, I wish my fifteen minutes would hurry up and come. I am so bored.â
âAnd Iâm making a list of waysâif I get the fifteen minutes of fameâwell, the ways I would want it to be.â
âWhat do you want to do? Splash down in the Pacific in a rocket ship? Discover a new germ?â She straightened. âYou know what Iâd want? Iâd want a fifteen-minute TV special. Iâd come out in a low-cut, shiny dress like Cher and Iâd be so good that everyone would say âWho is she?â and âSheâs going to be a star.ââ Carlie grinned. âThat way my fifteen minutes would just be the beginning of a whole lot of fifteen minutes. Iâd stretch it out like an all-day sucker.â
Harvey was still looking at the top of the hill. âI keep hearing a car but I donât see it.â
Carlie said quickly, âHow do you want to be famous?â
âI donât know. I forget what I put down now.â He looked down at his legs. âI just hope itâs not for something bad.â
âLike what?â
âOh, like maybe Iâve already had my fifteen minutesâmaybe when my dad ran over my legsââ He looked at Carlie. âI mean, everybody in town knew about it. Everyone was talking. People were driving past our house. Maybe that was my fifteen minutes.â
âNaw. They didnât just drive past your house for fifteen minutes, did they? Not if I know people. More like two or three days. No, youâre going to be famous. Hey, youâll be a writer. I know you will. Youâll write best-sellers.â
âI donât know.â
âLook, I was in the newspaper too one time, only they just called me a juvenile. You think I consider that fame? A juvenile? Naw, itâs got to be more than that. Youâll be a famous writer and then you can write a movie for me. Iâll get to be a star that way.â
âThatâs his car,â Harvey said abruptly. He made a move as if he was trying to get to his feet. A pain shot through his legs.
âAre you sure?â
âItâs the same car.â
Carlie got to her feet. âThen Iâll go inside as promised.â At the door she turned. âIf you need me, Iâll be right inside the
