“Hey, don’t mistake that for weakness,” I warned her.

“What do you mean?” she asked, looking a bit shaky.

Yeah, she better shake. I’m tired of taking people’s shit and getting the shit end of the stick. I glared at her for a moment as she started fidgeting with the zipper on her jacket. She was acting funny, and I didn’t know what she was up to but I was sure as hell going to find out.

“Never mind,” I told her as I grabbed the chart so I could sort out the mess she’d made that morning.

While I was back in the medicine room, Maggie came in and pulled up a chair.

“I saw what happened back there. Why didn’t you tell her it was Candace who messed up?”

“What’s the point? In the end, I was going to be back here doing this anyway. Plus, I don’t want Angie to think I won’t own up to my mistakes if I make them. That would only look bad when it comes time to fill your job. She was acting funny too. I think she’s up to something but I haven’t put my finger on it yet.”

    “Funny? How so?”

“I’m not really sure. She just wasn’t being herself. It was weird.”

“I think that girl’s weird no matter what,” Maggie joked. “I know you weren’t responsible for that and I have to give you kudos for falling on the sword like you did.”

I went back to filling the meds while Maggie kept me company, realizing there was no point in dwelling over things I couldn’t control. I started thinking about Jason and what he would do if he was being pushed around. I knew exactly what he’d do and secretly wished I could do the same, which was knock her ass out.

“What in the world are you smiling about?” she asked.

I used the few minutes I had to fill her in on the naughty bad boy that I’d been seeing. Of course, I left out specific details, such as the fact that he is a family member of someone in our care.

CHAPTER SEVEN

    Jason

The thought of a morning workout had gone to shit. Even though I just had a fight the previous night, I couldn’t afford to take any time off. I knew that within a couple of weeks, it would be time to fight again and I needed to be ready. My plan was to be up with the sun each day but that wasn’t going to be happening.

I grabbed my phone to look at the time and was shocked to see that it was almost noon. As I rubbed my eyes and looked around, I began to freak out a little. After a night of drinking, it took me a minute to realize where I was. I was used to waking up on top of my lumpy mattress with a spring poking into my back. It was no wonder I slept so long on Shelly’s pillow top mattress.

Through my aching head, the memories of the night before came screaming back. We had a great time drinking and partying. And then there was the sex. God damn that sex was smokin’ hot, and I couldn’t wait for round two. I always knew those quiet, shy girls were freaks in the sheets.

When I walked into the kitchen, I saw that Shelly had left a note for me.

You were sleeping so well and I didn’t want to wake you.

I had to go to work but make yourself something to eat if you’re hungry. I won’t get off work until 7:00.

Apparently I’d made a good impression on her. I didn’t plan on staying very long, however. I grabbed a quick shower, got dressed and called a cab. My car was still at the last bar we were. I only hoped I remembered which bar that was.

I was relieved when the cab pulled up in front of The Prophecy bar where we were partying late into the night. After paying the cab and sending him on his way, I decided I’d go and visit my brother. I’d been so busy with training that I hadn’t seen him in a few days. Plus, I’d have a chance to see Shelly for a few minutes.

As soon as I walked inside the assisted living center, I saw Shelly standing in the hall, writing something on one of her
