with water in the kitchen, and Brett put the roses in it, and placed them in the centre of the dining room table.
âI say. We have had a day.â
âYou donât remember anything about a date with me at the Crillon?â
âNo. Did we have one? I must have been blind.â
âYou were quite drunk, my dear,â said the count.
âWasnât I, though? And the countâs been a brick, absolutely.â
âYouâve got hellâs own drag with the concierge now.â
âI ought to have. Gave her two hundred francs.â
âDonât be a damned fool.â
âHis,â she said, and nodded at the count.
âI thought we ought to give her a little something for last night. It was very late.â
âHeâs wonderful,â Brett said. âHe remembers everything thatâs happened.â
âSo do you, my dear.â
âFancy,â said Brett. âWhoâd want to? I say, Jake,
do
we get a drink?â
âYou get it while I go in and dress. You know where it is.â
âRather.â
While I dressed I heard Brett put down glasses and then a siphon, and then heard them talking. I dressed slowly, sitting on the bed. I felt tired and pretty rotten. Brett came in the room, a glass in her hand, and sat on the bed.
âWhatâs the matter, darling? Do you feel rocky?â
She kissed me coolly on the forehead.
âOh, Brett, I love you so much.â
âDarling,â she said. Then: âDo you want me to send him away?â
âNo. Heâs nice.â
âIâll send him away.â
âNo, donât.â
âYes, Iâll send him away.â
âYou canât just like that.â
âCanât I, though? You stay here. Heâs mad about me, I tell you.â
She was gone out of the room. I lay face down on the bed. I was having a bad time. I heard them talking but I did not listen. Brett came in and sat on the bed.
âPoor old darling.â She stroked my head.
âWhat did you say to him?â I was lying with my face away from her. I did not want to see her.
âSent him for champagne. He loves to go for champagne.â
Then later: âDo you feel better, darling? Is the head any better?â
âItâs better.â
âLie quiet. Heâs gone to the other side of town.â
âCouldnât we live together, Brett? Couldnât we just live together?â
âI donât think so. Iâd just
tromper
you with everybody. You couldnât stand it.â
âI stand it now.â
âThat would be different. Itâs my fault, Jake. Itâs the way Iâm made.â
âCouldnât we go off in the country for a while?â
âIt wouldnât be any good. Iâll go if you like. But I couldnât live quietly in the country. Not with my own true love.â
âI know.â
âIsnât it rotten? There isnât any use my telling you I love you.â
âYou know I love you.â
âLetâs not talk. Talkingâs all bilge. Iâm going away from you, and then Michaelâs coming back.â
âWhy are you going away?â
âBetter for you. Better for me.â
âWhen are you going?â
âSoon as I can.â
âWhere?â
âSan Sebastian.â
âCanât we go together?â
âNo. That would be a hell of an idea after weâd just talked it out.â
âWe never agreed.â
âOh, you know as well as I do. Donât be obstinate, darling.â
âOh, sure,â I said. âI know youâre right. Iâm just low, and when Iâm low I talk like a fool.â
I sat up, leaned over, found my shoes beside the bed and put them on. I stood up.
âDonât look like that, darling.â
âHow do you want me to look?â
âOh, donât be a fool.
