gasp. â You ? What are you doing here? Get away !â
chapter thirteen
A SURPRISE REUNION
THE CIGARETTE FELL FROM HER MOUTH. LIVVY stared at her sister, at her black skirt and white top, her blond hair pulled straight back so neatly, her plastic bracelets on one wrist, everything so neat and perfect.
Except what was that expression on Destinyâs face? Eyes so wide and chin quivering. Destiny stared at Livvy as if sheâd never seen her before.
And was that fear in her eyes?
âDestiny, go away,â Livvy repeated. âI donât want to see you.â
âIâm your sister.â Destinyâs voice trembled. âWhy are you saying that?â
Livvy stared at her. âIâm busy right now. Iâm waiting for someone. Take a walk, Dee. I mean it.â
Destiny swallowed. She didnât move. âYou look so different. You cut your hair. Youâve lost weight, havenât you. And those dark rings around your eyesââ
âHey, no beauty tips, okay,â Livvy snarled. âI donât read Cosmo Girl anymore.â
âYouâre so pale, Livvy,â Destiny continued. âYou look as if you havenât slept in weeks. Listen to meââ
âNo, you listen to me, Dee,â Livvy said through clenched teeth. âRead my lips: Go away .â She glanced over Destinyâs shoulder. Where was Patrick?
âWas that you this afternoon?â Destiny asked, crossing her arms in front of her. âThe bat?â
âExcuse me?â Livvy pulled another cigarette from the pack. Her hand shook as she slid it between her lips. âWhat bat? I donât know what the hell youâre talking about.â
âIt wasnât you?â
âNo way. Were you dreaming or something?â
I donât know why I did that, Livvy thought, remembering the afternoon. Iâll never do it again.
âI thought I saw you in the club,â Destiny said, motioning to the entrance with her head. âYou didnât see me, did you? I was with Ari. But I think he left. We had a fight. I feel terrible. Heâs so sweet.â
âTell someone who cares,â Livvy said. She yawned.
Destiny startled her by grabbing her arm. âCome home, Liv. Come home with me right now.â
Livvy rolled her eyes. âYeah, sure. Good idea.â She tugged her arm free.
âNo, really,â Destiny insisted. âDad will find a cure. I know he will. Heâs working so hard, Liv. Heâll find a cure for you, and you can be normal again. You know. Back home.â
Livvy let out an angry cry. âYou never could stand to see me have fun!â she shouted. âGet a clue, Dee. I donât want to go back to that boring life.â
âYes, you do,â Destiny replied, tears in her eyes. âYou donât mean what youâre saying. You canât like what youâre doing. The way youâre living. You canât .â A sob escaped her throat.
Livvy took a deep breath. Her hands were clenched into tight fists at her sides. âDonât you see? Iâve made my choice. Iâm going to live forever. Thatâs my choice. You want to stay home and see your boring friends and that boring geek Ari, and go to school like a nice girl and be a nice, boring person for the rest of your life. And Iâve made a different choice. Thatâs all. No big deal, right?â
âBut, Livââ
âIâm going to live forever. Thatâs my choice. So get out of my face, Dee. Go away and donât come back.â
âIâ¦donât believe you.â Destiny let the tears roll down her cheeks. âYouâre my sister. My twin sister. And the two of us belong together. Weââ
âWe belong together? Okay!â Livvy cried. She let her fangs slide down over her lips. âYou want to stay together forever? Fine. You stay with me .â
She grabbed Destiny around the waist and
