years later, sometimes never. The ones who emerged as grown women and didnât know where they belonged anymore.
He thought of the bruises on Sabelleâs skin, the cuts heâd seen before the explosion. The strangely wondrous look on her face as she sat at his table with Brandy at her feet and clothes on her body.
He took her hands in his, his breath trapped in his chest. A hundred questions shuffled through his head, all too pointed, too horrible to ask.
âWhat . . . how did you escape?â
âI had help. A friend. She told me how to get away, where to go. She told me to come to you.â
Her fingers felt icy. He rubbed them in the warmth of his.
âWhy me?â he asked.
âBecause you wouldâve died if I hadnât.â
âHow do you even know me?â
She stared at her hands, clasped in his. Ryanâs patience was thin and brittle, but he forced a bland expression. Inside, though, turmoil churned.
âIâve always seen you, Ryan,â Sabelle murmured. âSince before your brother and sister died. The first time, I mean.â
He stood abruptly. Heâd moved away before he even realized heâd intended to.
âNo,â she said quickly. âYou donât understand. Itâs why Iâm so valuable.â
âWhatâs why?â he demanded, the soothing tones lost in his anger.
Heâd known it from the startâthat she was like the other lunatics who haunted Loveâs looking for a glimpse of the infamous twins whoâd cheated death so many times. But Reece was deadâthe permanent kind of deadâand Roxanne gone, largely because of the stalkers who wouldnât leave her alone. Heâd pegged Sabelle as one of them in those first few minutes after meeting her. Yet sheâd somehow won him over, made him forget.
âI see things, Ryan,â she said urgently. âThings that havenât happened yet. Things that are yet to come. Do you understand?â
âNot even a little bit.â
âI knew Loveâs was going to blow up because Iâm a seer.â
âA seer,â he repeated, nonplussed. âYou mean youâre a psychic?â
âIn a way. A powerful one. I was held captive because what I see comes true.â
âAnd you busted out of prison to come save me,â he said in tones so cold they made her flinch.
He couldnât help it. He was angry and confused. He wasnât even certain what they were talking about anymore. Heâd gone from thinking the worst to absolute bewilderment. What did any of this have to do with him? With his brother and sister? With Loveâs exploding?
âDo you know what it means to know the future?â she asked, her voice vibrating with her emotion. She pushed out of her chair and came to stand in front of him. âDo you understand the power that can be wielded by knowing whatâs going to happen tomorrow? Next week? Next year ?â
Her gaze was steady now; her voice no longer wavered. She stood tall and proud, and so fucking beautiful that he had to look away.
âDo you?â she demanded.
He nodded slowly. âI can guess.â
âI see the future,â she said again, forcefully, angrily. âAnd I am never wrong.â
âNever?â
She shook her head. All the antsy body language had faded away, but the desperation . . . it was still there, glowing brightly in those baby-blue eyes.
âI came to save you because I knew you would save me.â
âBecause you saw it?â he said evenly.
âBecause I see you. I know what kind of man you are. You wouldnât, couldnât , turn away a woman in need.â
âDonât count on it.â
âI am counting on it. Iâve bet my life on it.â
The impassioned words echoed in the quiet kitchen and Ryan felt the reverberation down to his soul.
âYou saved my life so you could use me?â
