down from the stage and followed the reporter. âFinish packing,â he told the twins, motioning with his head to the Box of Doom. âIâll see this guy out and be right back.â
âThat reporter is a complete sleazeball,â Mimi said after they left.
âWith bad breath,â Beezel said.
âOh my gosh!â Mimi said. âWe forgot about Wil!â She turned the box around and opened the secret panel, and Wiliken climbed out. âAre you okay?â she asked him.
âIâm fine, but it was hard not to bust out of the box and punch that guy in the nose,â he said.
âYou canât do that,â Beezel said as she handed him the reporterâs card. âThatâs just what he wants you to do. Think of how heâd write
that
story.â
âYouâre right.â Wiliken smiled. âBut, still, itâs very tempting!â He glanced at the card. âI knew it was Slear. He follows me everywhere. That guyhas made me his personal mission. I canât buy a slice of pizza without that jerkâs face popping up.â
âDo you know who it was that talked to him about your grandfather?â Beezel asked him.
Wiliken nodded. âI know exactly who it was. My grandpaâs second cousin, Edwin.â
Beezel and Mimi exchanged looks. Edwin was the name of the man Gaidic had told them about.
âHeâs a real pain,â Wiliken said. âHoogaboom said he was always dropping in on my grandpa uninvited for weeks at a time. As soon as grandpa died, he was at the front door, bags in hand, waiting to hear the will read. And heâs
still
here. Hoogaboom says heâs miffed that my grandpa left me the house instead of him.â Wiliken shrugged sadly. âBut I didnât think family did that sort of thing to each other, you know? Sold family stories?â
âThey shouldnât,â Beezel said. In the Trimoni Circus, their family and friends were the most important things they had. She couldnât imagine doing what Edwin had done.
âYep, that Edwin guy is as big a jerk as Slear,â Mimi said.
âMimi!â Beezel said, glancing at Wiliken to see ifMimi had offended him. After all, they were related. But Wiliken just laughed and agreed.
âHoogaboom will hit the roof when he hears Edwin did this,â Wiliken said. âHeâs been worried that Edwin is after our treasure. But at least heâs leaving at the end of the week, and weâll be rid of him.â
Mimiâs mouth fell open.
âGreat sorcererâs sweat socks!â Beezel said. âYou mean to tell me that
you
think thereâs treasure inside your grandpaâs house, too?â
âOf course,â Wiliken said as he dusted off his pants. âDidnât Hoogaboom tell you we were looking for it? He told me he was going to.â
âHe did tell Hector,â Mimi said. âBut he said it was
all
the treasure from a Spanish galleon. And that
all
of it was hidden inside the house somewhere.â
âAnd he said that he and your grandpa have been looking for it for
twenty
years,â Beezel said.
Wiliken grew silent.
âWil?â Mimi asked. âAre you okay?â
âHuh?â Wiliken said. âOh, I was just thinking, and Hoogaboom is wrong.â
Beezelâs heart sank. Uncle Hoogaboom wasunraveling after all. The treasure was probably just some gold coins tucked away somewhere. Hector was going to be so upset when he found out.
âYeah, heâs dead wrong,â Wiliken said thoughtfully. âI think itâs been twenty-two years.â
It was the twinsâ turn to be silent. Finally, Mimi said the thing that was on Beezelâs mind as well. âBut thatâs just crazy,â Mimi said. âIf there was all the treasure from a galleon inside the house and they had been searching for it all that time, they would have found it.â
