ex,â she said. Then she sniffled. âI canât believe Cam is now your
ex
. . . .â
âFocus, Allie!â
âOkay, sorry. Anyway, so Mr. Rebound should be totally different, but nobody you would ever be serious about long-term. Heâs like the palate-cleansing sorbet you have between the courses of a good meal.â
I laughed. She really did have a way with words sometimes. Maybe sheâd make that bestselling book happen after all.
âOkay,â I said. âWell, if you think of anyone that fits the bill, let me know. Iâm a little rusty on this whole dating deal. I mean, the last time I went out with anyone but Cam, I still had a nine thirty curfew, and a peck on the lips at the end of a date was cause for gossip and scandal.â
âAw, thatâs true. You and Cam have been together for so long. Too bad it had to end now.â
I rolled my eyes. âLook, I feel bad enough about this as it is,â I said. âEnough with the guilt trip, okay?â
âSorry.â She sounded a bit wounded. âBut Iâm kind of glad to hear you admit that you feel bad. Itâs kind of hard to tell sometimes.â
âWhatever.â I didnât feel like getting in a fight with my best friend today of all days, even if she was practically accusing me of being a robot. âSorry for snapping at you. I guess maybe Iâm a little touchy right now.â
She immediately sounded more sympathetic. âNo,
Iâm
sorry,â she said. âYouâre allowed. I know this has to be roughâyou know, getting dumped.â She paused, then couldnât help adding, âEven if it was, you know, all your idea.â
âThanks.â I smiled, knowing she was trying. âListen, I should go call Nick and let him know.â
âOkay. Call me if you need me.â
Iâd barely hit the button to hang up when the phone rang in my hand. âHello?â I said.
âLexi? Yo, itâs me. Bruce. So I hear youâre swinging single these days.â
I winced. News travels fast in a small town. Still, Camâs buddy wasnât the first one Iâd expected to call to offer his sympathies.
âUm, thatâs right,â I told him. âAs youprobably heard, Cam met someone else. Iâm really happy for them.â
âCool. So youâre over it already?â he said. âThen how about going out with me? You know what they sayâyouâre supposed to get right back on the horse, right?â
I wasnât sure if that was one of his sleazy little jokes or just a bad choice of words. But it didnât really matter. Now that I thought about it, maybe I shouldnât have been so surprised to hear from Bruce. Heâd been obviously lusting after me for years. Iâd always thought he was at least half joking with all the little innuendos and lingering glancesâafter all, heâd never hesitated to do all that stuff right in front of Camâbut then again, maybe not. Okay, so maybe most guys probably wouldnât have asked me out within an hour of the breakup. But Iâd always known that Bruce wasnât like most guys.
And maybe that was perfect. Allieâs Rebound Guy Theory floated through my head, and I smiled. Complete opposite of my ex? Check. Nobody Iâd ever be serious about?
Double
check.
âSure, why not?â I said. âSounds like fun.â
âGreat!â Bruce actually sounded a little surprised. âYou wonât regret this, Lexi. What should we do? Dinner? Dancing? A candlelit evening at my place?â
I shuddered. There was rebounding, and then there was
rebounding
. âI have a better idea,â I said quickly. âHow about the North Pole? The first is only a few days away.â
December 1 at the North Pole Theater was another of Claus Lakeâs holiday traditions. That was always the date of the old-fashioned movie houseâs first annual showing
