Night?â
âI couldnât make anything of it either,â Bruno admitted. âThen I realized: Thereâs more than one kind of Quaker â¦â
âThere is? You mean like low church and high church, that sort of thing?â
âNo. I was watching them play on TV last night.â
âRight, the Quakers. University of Pennsylvania. Big 5 basketball. Crosstown rivalries. Great stuff. You donât think basketball fans did this? I mean itâs basketball, not soccer.â
âWell it was volleyball, but thatâs not the point. Are you paying attention?â
âOh, right,â the Chief said. âI guess I am distracted. See that kid in there with the bright red hair?â
Bruno turned around discreetly.
âJust go ahead and stare at him. Thereâs no secret. He knows that we know that heâs the townâs biggest drug problem.â
âOK.â
âCan you read his mind?â
âJust like this? In a room crowded with all these people? Too many distractions.â
âGo ahead. Give it a try anyway.â
Bruno shut his eyes and tried to concentrate. Within seconds he was shaking his head, as if trying to ward off a hungry mosquito. â Feh . Thatâs one messed up kid in there.â
âWhatâs he thinking?â
âI couldnât tell.â
âBut you said something â¦â
âYeah, itâs chazeraiâ a big mess. But thatâs just a general impression. A sense.â
âLike an aura. Could you see his aura?â
âNot exactly. I donât do auras.â
âCâmon,â scoffed the Chief. âWhatâd you see?â
âThings donât look too good for that kid. I think he might be in big trouble.â
âThat makes sense. Heâs a drug addict. Do you have anything more specific?â
âNo.â
âHmpf.â The Chief seemed to be sulking.
âAnyway, I want to go right away and track down my lead about the Quakers.â
âYou call that a lead?â
âMost definitely.â
âAnd how are you planning to follow up?â
âIâm heading over to the campus. Do some research in the library and then just ⦠check things out.â
âCheck things out?â
âYeah. Walk around. See whatâs going on over there.â
âWell you canât.â
âI canât? Why not?â
âWe have an appointment. Tell you what Iâll do, though. Iâll have HarryâSergeant Abrahamâcall the campus cops and do a sweep of the message boards. Heâs our best technology resource; maybe heâll come up with something for you. And Iâm going to have MichelleâOfficer Coxeâcheck the hospitals and clinics. I really think those are our best shots right now.â
The Chief started laughing.
âWhaâs funny?â complained Bruno, failing to guess that Chief Black had already moved on to another topic.
âI donât know how I could have forgotten. This Rabbi called. Nameâs Nachman. Ever heard of him?â
âNot really. Name sounds familiar, but I canât place it.â
âIf you knew him I donât think youâd forget. Heâs a bit flamboyant. Lit a fire under the Mayor. Asked a lot of weird questions about you. Wanted to know how old you are. Whether youâre married. Where did you study? Whatdya think? Is he looking for a date?â
âNot my type. Must be an Orthodox Rabbi.â
âAny idea what heâs up to?â
âAccording to the Orthodox, nobodyâs supposed to mess around with the Kabbalah ⦠except themselves. They say if youâre not at least 40, married, and havenât mastered the Talmud and all the other sacred books, then using the Kabbalah will create a lot of trouble.â
âWhat kind of trouble?â
âThe evil eye. Avenging angels. False messiahs. Wrath of God. That kind of
