.â
âWell, she did. So suck it up, loser.â
âJenny.â Rachel heard the warning in Graceâs voice and followed her gaze to Victoriaâs hands, which hung by her side, crackling with some sort of fierce energy.
âI think itâs time the newbies were taught a lesson.â The crackling energy was now climbing up Victoriaâs arms.
âBring it on, sweetie,â Jenny said, releasing her grip on Rachel, âbut there ainât nothing you can teach me.â
âSILENCE.â
The buzz of the arena muted instantly, and everyone turned to face Lady Hecate, who stood high on the bleachers, with the handsome privateer behind her.
âThe victor of todayâs Trial has been summoned by the Hunters.â There was a hushed gasp throughout the crowd. âSt Johnâs of Dunbridge, you will relinquish your competitor for the remainder of the day.â
The hordes of students separated silently, making a path from Rachel to the bleachers. She shook her head.
âGrace,â she whispered, âdo you think itâs safe?â
âI donât know.â
In the immediate crowd she saw a shock of strawberry blond hair and a very wide smile. Boy-Adie was waving his arms in encouragement. âGo!â he said, grinning.
âWhatâs going to happen to her? Will she be okay?â Adie asked.
Boy-Adieâs lanky frame shook with barely contained excitement.
âSheâll get to see the Huntersâ Mansion. Itâs a great honour!â
Adie was still eyeing her with worry, but Rachelâs mind was set at ease. Her echoing footsteps were the only sound as she waved at her friends and made her way through the crowd and up onto the bleachers.
âThis is Aruj of Morgane,â Lady Hecate said, her expression showing no pleasure in making the introduction.
âYou have a gift, Rachel of Dunbridge.â Arujâs voice was low and deep, like a sound from the depths of the ocean.
Rachel couldnât reply. The pale eyes set in dark skin were striking, almost hypnotic. With considerable effort she finally managed a smile, and followed close behind him as he led her out of the arena.

âI hope sheâll be alright.â Grace watched her friend leave with the stranger in the weird outfit, and tried not to worry.
âIâm sure itâs fine,â Una said lightly. âThey probably wonâttorture her for information or anything.â
â
Una
.â
âI said they probably
wonât
.â
Grace sighed.
âJennyâs still itching for a fight, I can tell.â
âYeah, sheâs got that snorting bull look she gets sometimes. Never seen her actually fight anyone, though. I mean, like, with fists. Do you think she would?â
âSometimes I wonder.â
âHey,â Una said, nudging her in the ribs, âtake a look at Adie and Boy-Adie. I donât know whoâs gone redder.â
Grace grinned as Adie chatted with an embarrassed smile, and the tall boy jammed his hands self-consciously into his pockets. Una nudged her again.
âDelilahâs gone to the dark side, though. Look, sheâs practically hiding under those bleachers.â
âDonât say it like that, Una.â
âI donât mean it in a bad way. I just mean sheâs doing that thing again, where she goes all quiet. Like she was before â¦â
Adie came skipping towards them, saving them the unpleasantness of having to remember Delilahâs mother.
âHey, you guys. Want to head inside for dinner?â
âSo,â said Una, âdid you finally get his name?â
âHis nameâs Gaukroger,â Adie replied.
âOh, Iâm so sorry.â
âI like Gaukroger.â
âI like him too, but thatâs a terrible name.â
