sheâs also got a heart of gold.â He stood up from his chair. âIs there anything else I can help you with?â he asked. âI hate to cut this short, but I do have a lot of work.â
âJust one more question,â Frank said.
âYes?â Dean Turner asked.
âWhy hasnât Georgianne called the trustees yet to tell them about all these accidents?â Frank asked.
Turner shook his head and shrugged. âI donât know. She keeps threatening, but so far she hasnât followed through on her threats.â
âThat seems a little strange, doesnât it?â Joe asked. âSince, as you say, she wants your job.â
Frank nodded in agreement. âBut who knows. Maybe sheâs waiting for someone to get hurt, so it looks really bad.â
âI hope not,â Turner said sadly. âThatâs a terrible thought.â
The Hardys had just gotten up from their chairs when the phone on Turnerâs desk rang.Turner answered it. Frank motioned to Joe that they should leave.
Turner held his hand over the mouthpiece and said, âPlease, boys, stay a moment, if you donât mind.â
Frank exchanged a look with Joe and sat back down in the chair across from Turnerâs desk. The dean didnât say more than two or three words to the person on the other end of the line. After a moment he hung up the phone and sat down slowly, a dazed expression on his face.
âWhat is it?â Joe asked.
âWhatâs wrong?â Frank said.
âThat was the head trustee for Circus U.,â Turner said dully.
âAnd?â Frank asked.
Turner swallowed before going on. âHe said that Georgianne Unger just called him to tell him about the accidents. He said that unless I find out who is behind the incidents within one week, Iâll be removed as dean of Circus U.â

âWhat?â Joe asked Turner. âYou mean theyâll fire you?â
âThatâs exactly what I mean,â Turner said. He rounded his desk and started pacing back and forth. âOh, this is terrible, just terrible.â
Joe watched as Frank stepped over to Turner and put his hand on the deanâs arm. âCalm down,â the older Hardy urged. âWeâll get to the bottom of this.â
âFrankâs right, Dean Turner,â Joe put in. âWeâve got a week. Thatâs plenty of time.â
Turner sighed deeply. âOh, I hope so,â he said. âOh, no,â he added, looking at his watch. âI have an appointment with an important donor in fifteen minutes. Would you mindââ
âNo problem,â Joe said. âThereâs just one more question. What do you know about a guy with the Montero Brothers Circus by the name of Ralph Rosen?â
Dean Turner looked puzzled. âRalph Rosen? I personally kicked him out of this school about a year ago.â
âYou mean Rosen went to Circus U.?â Joe asked.
âHe did,â Turner said. âUntil he got expelled. In fact, Iâm stunned to hear that heâs working for the Montero Brothers Circus. Jim Jacobs didnât tell me heâd hired him. Iâll have to speak to him about that. With his record, Rosen shouldnât even be clowning for a third-rate outfit, let alone a world-class circus like the Montero.â Turner shook his head a few times, as if trying to clear his thoughts. âHow did you find out that Rosen was working for the circus?â
âItâs a long story,â Joe said. He took a deep breath and quickly explained to Dean Turner that Rosen had dropped one of his jugglerâs balls in Chetâs tote bag and then disappeared. âSo we went looking for him,â he went on. âBut the guyâs taken off.â
âIâm not surprised,â Turner said. âAbout Rosen taking off, that is. He used to miss classes all the time. When he did come he would disrupt
