her boys. Said she wanted to meet the wonderful woman who talked me into getting off my high horse and calling her.â Josiahâs eyes grew misty. âFunny thing about your mother, she has a heart of gold. I wish Iâd appreciated that when I was younger. Itâs something you miss out on about your wife when youâre busy trying to make a living.â
Jack blinked. âAre you going to marry Sara?â
âYep,â Josiah said, âjust as soon as Iâm well.â
âOur family tree is odd,â Jack said. âThereâs a lot of twists among the branches.â
Josiah shrugged. âEvery family has its twists and unique branches, son. The fact that we keep fertilizing the roots is what makes our tree strong.â
âOh, hell,â Jack said. âNext youâre going to be after me to do some fertilizing. Pop, kids is one thing youâre never going to get out of me, so donât even start the chorus.â
âExcuse me,â the doctor said as he came into the room, âIâm Dr. Goodlaw.â
Jack stood, shook the doctorâs hand. âJack Morgan.â
âAh, Mr. Morganâs eldest son.â
Jack nodded.
âWell, I have an unusual bit of news,â Dr. Goodlawsaid. âWe just had a kidney come up that is a match for you, Mr. Morgan.â
âWhat does that mean, exactly?â Josiahâs brows furrowed.
âIt means that this particular kidney is from a young accident victim whose parents want his organs donated. He was healthy and active, and his family would like to know that his organs are helping other people to live healthy, active lives. I know you have a family match who has offered, but I recall you didnât elect for surgery under those conditions.â
âNo, I did not,â Josiah said with a stern glance at Jack. âI donât elect, not one bit.â
âItâs up to you, Mr. Morgan, although a decision will need to be reached fairly quickly. There are other recipients in the registry, of course.â
Jack and his father looked at each other. Then Josiah shrugged. âI donât need any time to think it over. Iâll take the kidney.â
Dr. Goodlaw nodded. âIâll go make the arrangements.â He shook Jackâs hand, then Josiahâs. âThis will move fairly quickly.â
âGood,â Josiah shot back. âIâm tired of feeling like Iâm at everyoneâs mercy.â
The doctor smiled and left the room. Josiah refused to meet Jackâs gaze. Jack knew exactly what his father was thinking: I owe nobody nothing. Jack couldnât say whether he felt any particular relief that he wouldnât be giving up a part of his body. âAre you all right, Pop?â
âIâm fine,â Josiah said. âAs fine as anyone can be who just had a miracle thrust upon them.â
âWhat do you mean?â Jack went and sat by his father.
âI prayed I wouldnât have to take your kidney. I couldnât stand the thought of you rodeoing with one kidney. I just donât want to outlive my kids,â Josiah said. âNow that Iâve got my boys all around, Iâd like to get to know you.â
Jack felt honest emotion jump inside him. He looked away, cleared his throat. âI almost like you better when youâre being a jackass.â
âThatâs because Iâm an enemy you can keep fighting against. You like holding grudges. But you wonât get any fight out of me, son. Iâm getting a young personâs kidney, and Iâm going to take full advantage of the spark it gives me. Youâre off the hook.â
Jack shook his head. âYou just didnât want anything from me.â
âTrue.â Josiah closed his eyes. âI donât want you doing anything for me that you donât really want to do.â
âI didnât mind, Pop.â
âI know you didnât mind the
