here.â
âThe guyâs a dinosaur. Totally obsolete. And he doesnât know it. Gives him a certain power, I guess. Charm, too, I guess. Look, Louise, it doesnât do us any good to be upset. If he ups the ante, youâll tell him where I am. Thatâs all. ThenIâll have to deal with him. Really. I appreciate you trying to keep him off.â
âHe wants you back, Kath. You get this or you donât?â
âDoesnât matter. Maybe he wants to own the New York Yankees. Same difference.â
Louise makes her evil grin again. âHe thinks you want him back. âDonât let her kid you,â he tells me. âGirl goes to sleep thinking about this,â he says, grabbing you know what.â
âWhat, Louise . . . his Harley?â
âYeah, right, Kathy.â
âGive me a cigarette.â
âTouch a nerve, sweetie?â
Kathy lights up, takes a deep drag, then mostly plays with the cigarette. âJesus, Louise, you are something. You think Iâd let a low-life like Keith threaten what Iâve got going?â
âAnd what is that, Kathy? Iâd like to know.â
âDonât be so tough. I hope youâre not pissed because Iâm trying to improve my life. Come on.â
âI love you. No, Iâm not pissed about that. But Iâll tell you. My brother comes home and says heâs born again, Iâd want some particulars. Guyâs almost as bad as Keith, so you understand my point.â
âI donât like that, Louise. Iâm not born again, okay? I moved to Manhattan, got a pretty good job, nice little apartment. Starting over, not born again.â
âNow howâd this happenâexactly? You maybe fuck somebody?â
âLouise, stop. I went to the paper in Bergen, got a job as a secretary, office admin. Boring bullshit job. But I figuredâpretend Iâm an adult, give it a chance. Suddenly they need somebody to help with some promotions. Slogans. I was in some meetings, pitched in my bit. And they say, now youâre doing it full time. Eight months later I see an ad for a job over here, doing the same stuff. I figure, letâs take a shot. I walked in like I owned the place. Smiled a lot. Looked everyone in the eye. Whatever they asked, I said, âNoproblem.â Truth. Thatâs the way itâs been. No problem.â
Louise shrugs in surrender, maybe get Kathy back to what matters here. âIâm sorry. . . . Congratulations.â
âI think Iâm on a roll. I feel good. Hell, I feel great.â
âRolled right into Mr. Right?â
Kathy shrugs yes.
âUh, tingling all over?â
âLouise. Maybe you had some bedside manner. Once.â They stare at each other, smiling. âHey, you jealous?â
Louise shrugs. âI donât know. Maybe.â Her expression softens. âYeah, maybe. If itâs real, what you got.â
âOh, itâs real.â
Louise smirks. âOh, married guy?â
âWould you stop? I told you, heâs not that married.â She smiles. âLess all the time.â
âOh? Heâs leaving his wife for you.â
âHell,â Kathy says, âin his place, I would.â
âGot to give it to you. You got good attitude.â She waits a few seconds, blows smoke up. âSo you been fucking this guy. Like an hour ago. Which put the red in your cheeks.â
Kathy thinking, Funny, a few years ago, Iâd be telling her the size of the guyâs dick. Now it seems wrong. I live in Bronxville. We may fuck, but we do not talk so much.
âThat smile means what?â Louise peers hard at her.
âHeâs a fine man. Sorry, but Iâm not telling youââKathy starts laughingââhow high he comes.â
âWhat! Tell me. Seriously, you saw?â
âA joke. Louise. Listen to me. About Keith. The reason he canât find me is because I
