Kemper asked, âwhy donât we circle ahead of them?â
Ahern turned and looked at his friend.
âWhat?â Kemper asked.
âI was just thinking,â Ahern said, âthat might be the first time youâve ever had a good idea.â
âMaybe itâs just the first time you ever listened to what I have to say.â
Ahern thought a moment, then said, âNo, thatâs not it.â
EIGHTEEN
They traveled several more days without stopping at a town. Clint finally relented and pulled into the town of Calvert. It had a general store that doubled as a saloon, and not much else. They restocked a bit but the ladies were not able to find a bathtub. They did, however, buy several pairs of britches.
After they left town, the girls took turns in the back of the wagon, changing from their skirts to their pants. When they were done, Bridget ended up in front with Clint, while Bride was in the back of the wagon.
She noticed Clint craning his neck to look back behind them, and she put her hand on his arm. He whipped his head around to look at her.
âIs something wrong?â she asked.
âIâm just keeping an eye out behind us,â he said.
âDo you think weâre being followed?â
âWell, maybe not followed,â he said.
âWhat do you mean?â
âI mean I thought someone might be trailing usâthat is, not following us, but following our trail, keeping out of sight.â
âWhy would they do that?â
âI donât know,â he said. âThey could be following me because they recognized me, and at some point, they may want to try me.â
âTry you?â
âTry to kill me.â
âWhy?â
âJust because of who I am.â
âThat must be a terrible thing to live with,â she said.
âOn the other hand,â he said, âmaybe itâs not me.â
âWhat do you mean?â she asked.
âIs there any reason you and your sister might have been followed?â
âFrom Ireland?â
âI donât know,â he said. âFrom Ireland, from New York.â
âWhy would anyone follow us?â she asked.
âI donât know,â he said. âIâm asking you.â
âI have no idea.â
âWell,â Clint said with one last look behind them, âmaybe Iâm just wrong.â
*Â *Â *Â
Ahern and Kemper rode into Saint Joseph, Missouri, ahead of Clint and the Shaughnessy sisters.
âWhy donât we wait for them here?â Kemper asked when they stopped in a saloon for a drink.
âNo,â Ahern said.
âWhy not?â
âBecause Iâve already made plans for Council Bluffs,â he said. âIâve got some men waitinâ for us there.â
âOh,â Kemper said. âWell, why didnât you tell me that before?â
âI didnât think there was any reason to confuse you.â
âWhy do you always treat me like Iâm stupid?â
âSeems to me Iâm less likely to make a mistake that way,â Ahern said.
âWhat?â
âNever mind,â Ahern said. âDrink your beer, then weâll pick up some coffee and jerky and get back on the trail.â
âWhy donât we spend the night?â
âWhy donât you stop makinâ suggestions, Kemp?â Ahern asked.
âHey,â Kemper said, âIâm the one who suggested we get ahead of them, remember?â
âYeah,â Ahern said, âand you should quit while youâre ahead.â
NINETEEN
When they rode into Saint Joseph, Bride was visibly relieved to see a real town.
âThe first thing I want is a bathtub,â she said, âand a hot bath.â
They had bathed along the way in streams and waterholes, but they were all cold, just a quick in and out.
âI want a long soak,â Bridget said.
They both looked at Clint.
âAll right,â he said,
