have the decency to look embarrassed. She just shot me a pitying glance and began rummaging through a drawer.
âYou wish,â she muttered.
âActually, I donât,â I said.
That caught her attention, and the smug look on her face slipped. But only for a second.
âWhat do you want?â she demanded again.
âI want to know why you broke up with Cody.â
Liberty stopped rummaging and regarded me with amusement. Then she stuck her bottom lip out in an exaggerated pout. âWhy? Did Cody get his little feelings hurt? Is he crying? Did he send you over here to beg me to take him back?â
It was all I could do not to pounce on Liberty and scratch her eyes out. I still donât know how I managed to keep my cool. But I did. âAnswer my question,â I said.
Liberty let out an enormous sigh. âI would have thought it was obvious. Cody is a little boy. And Iâm looking for a man.â
I felt my eyebrows jump, but the rest of me stayed perfectly still.
âLike Jason Kaufmann?â I said snidely. âIs that your idea of a man â
this week
?â
A smile played at the corners of Libertyâs mouth. âMaybe.â She shrugged. âAs soon as I find out, Iâll let you know.â Then she turned back to her dresser.
âOr are you looking for someone more like Mr. Henderson?â
I donât even remember thinking those words, never mind saying them out loud! But I must have, because Liberty grabbed the edge of the drawer so tightly her knuckles went white.
âYou donât know what youâre talking about,â she snapped, but she didnât sound quite as confident as she had before.
âWell, you see, thatâs the thing,â I said in a buttery voice. âI
do
know.â I watched Libertyâs back stiffen. âBecause Ryan told me. And
he
knows because he saw you. He was in the band room that morning â in one of the practice booths. He saw you unbutton your blouse, and he saw you throw yourself at Mr. Henderson. He also saw Mr. Henderson reject you.â That last part wasnât completely true, but Liberty didnât know that.
She spun around. Judging from the horrified expression on her face, Iâd guessed right.
I didnât even try to hide my pleasure. In fact, I couldnât resist rubbing a little salt into the wound. âI guess Mr. Henderson isnât interested in little girls.â
I expected a smart comeback like,
Itâs his loss!
But for once, Liberty was speechless. I knew I had the answers Iâd come for.
So I turned around â and walked right into Mrs. Hayes. I mumbled an apology, but she didnât hear me. She didnât see me either. It was like I wasnât even there. Her eyes were totally glued on Liberty. And they were flashing fire. Itâs a wonderthe whole room didnât burst into flame.
For once, I was glad I wasnât Liberty.
Cody picked me up about a mile from home.
âSo, did you rearrange her face?â he asked as I slid onto the seat beside him.
âWhose face?â
âLibertyâs. You were just at her house, werenât you?â
âHow do you know?â I said, unable to keep the amazement out of my voice.
He grinned. âEasy. Iâm smart.â
âSince when?â
His grin got bigger. âSince I dumped Liberty.â
I just about choked. âExcuse me. I hate to burst your bubble, but sheâs the one who broke up with you â remember?â
Cody shrugged. âShe mustâve found out I was going to dump her and beat me to it so she wouldnât look bad.â
I rolled my eyes. âRight, Romeo. And why would
you
dump
her
?â
He shrugged again. âI didnât like the competition.â
âYou mean Jason Kaufmann?â
âI mean her dad.â
âSay what?â
âMr. Hayes. When Liberty and I were together, thatâs all she talked about. It was like
