Valerie
guessed running into the older man had been a coincidence, but
Hott must have sent his brother to her for some reason. She rose to
unsteady feet and hid behind Ulfr. More heated words were
exchanged then, to her horror, Ulfr pulled her out from behind
him. He said something to her, but she didn‟t understand.
Ulfr gripped her tightly to his chest when the other man
reached for her. Swords were raised. With her panic rising and
both men shouting, she cried out for Hott. Immediately both men
quieted. The older man narrowed his eyes onto her. Filled with
panic, she again cried out for Hott to come. Ulfr looked very
smug. The older man glared at her. He asked her something. She
caught the word Hott. She pointed at herself and said Hott‟s name.
She wanted him to know she belonged to another. The man threw

back his head and howled loudly. Valerie jumped, at the god-awful
noise; a fine layer of goose bumps dotted her arms. She felt a large
hand placed onto her shoulder as Ulfr curled her tighter into his
broad chest. The older man then stormed off.
Ulfr turned her in his arms and held her by her shoulders. He
studied her naked form until she blushed all the way to her toes.
She went from fearful to angry. She stomped her foot and declared
she was Hott‟s. Ulfr just nodded and smiled. He released her after
he gave her a huge bear hug, lifting her from her feet.
He then grabbed up a hide pack of sorts and sifted through it.
He tossed her a garment which she donned eagerly. It was soft
leather, she slipped it over her head and it hung just under her
behind, barely. She had a sneaking suspicion part of it was missing.
Her eyes narrowed onto Ulfr. He just shrugged.
It was impossible for Valerie to know that most of the
woman‟s clothing had been sent with them to Valhalla when they
died. It had been a chore to just find this. Nevertheless Valerie was
grateful for something to cover her. Ulfr led her back to the
cavern. He sat her down on a rough piece of leather, also produced
from his pack. He then handed her a hard piece of what she
assumed to be some type of bread. It was a bit stale, but she was
hungry and she wolfed it down.
    “Valkyrie,” Ulfr said.
    “Valerie,” she corrected.
Ulfr nodded in understanding. He handed her a leather flask
and bid her to drink. She did and choked on a substance that wasn‟t
water. It was something obviously fermented. She was thirsty
though and downed a few large gulps. She handed the flask back to
him, but Ulfr urged her to drink more. The taste was sweet and
enjoyable and so she drank more. She realized soon it was a
mistake. She grew very lazy very soon after and her insides felt
warm and tingly. Obviously Viking booze was a lot more potent
than the stuff she was used to. That and the fact she had hardly

eaten had her belly doing summersaults. This time when she
handed the flask back, Ulfr took it and drank some.
Valerie was still hungry. She asked him for more food. He
shook his head not understanding. She motioned to her mouth.
Ulfr said a word and she understood he wanted her to repeat it.
But had she asked for more food or said please, or was it the word
for mouth? She frowned. She took the flask from his grasp and held
it up. She pointed it at him. He cocked his head for a moment then
said a word. She repeated it, and waved the flask, and he nodded.
She then repeated the word he had used that she thought meant
food. Again he cocked his head as though thinking about it. Finally,
as if making a decision, he handed her some dried meat. She bit
hungrily into it. It was good! She ate two large pieces before her
belly stopped feeling like it was on a rollercoaster. She yawned
    tiredly.
    “Hott?” she asked.
Ulfr imitated a bow and arrow being used. Hott was hunting
and he had sent Ulfr to guard her no doubt. But would she
