how to find a major vampire holding, as well as knowing me all too well. Even if I convinced the circle that you could be trusted, Ferine would just come after you again.”
“So the two of you have been rivals for centuries?” She stopped for a moment to meet my gaze.
“Yes.” I really didn’t want to get into it right now.
“I think I deserve more than just a yes. He attacked me because of you, didn’t he?”
She had a point. “Close to three hundred years ago I got into a bit of a jam with vampire hunters on my tail. Ferine was a wealthy man, but his money couldn’t buy him the one thing he wanted, a longer life. He found me and we struck a deal. He’d protect me and I’d turn him. Becoming a vampire is not a simple thing and not everyone who tries it survives. The first step is becoming a blood slave.”
Her eyes widened then a wicked grin spread across her face. “Oh my God. You were lovers.”
I shrugged. “That’s how Ferine saw it. Blood and sex go together for us, but it was just feeding, not like between two mortals. This isn’t well known, but we get a certain amount of our sustenance from sex. It produces an energy we feed off.” I ran my gaze down her body and back, then gave her a wink. “In fact, older vampires need sex more than blood. Once I turned Ferine, I had no more interest in being with him. I really don’t like men that way.”
She smirked at me. “Unless you’re sucking their blood.” Her brows drew down in thought. “So why not have sex with the delivery guy?”
I leaned across the counter and let my desire for her show. “Because I’d rather save it for you. I don’t have to get both from the same source and you are way more attractive.”
“Oh. So you won’t bite me every time?”
“No, that would kill you. Unless injured, I only need blood every week or two, now, but that’s still too often for one mortal. But I don’t think I could go that long without the comfort of your sweet touch.”
She drew back and crossed her arms protectively over her chest, then turned to put things in the fridge. “So I’m just another type of food for you.”
“No, pet. You know why I never kissed you before? I knew once I did, I’d never want to stop.” I came around the counter and wrapped my arms around her back. I pressed tight, letting her feel the raging hard-on threatening to tear through my jeans. “Worse, I can smell your desire. I know you want me. Why try to deny it?”
She struggled to speak. “Because you scare the shit out me. Because I’ve never been good at casual sex. I couldn’t live with being just your blood whore. I need more. A partner, not a master. Anything less would destroy what little self-respect I have left.” Her amber eyes glittered with rising tears as she searched my face, begging for something to make it all better.
I brushed her hair back from her face. “Pet, Kierra, this is not casual sex. Between a vampire and a mortal, there can be no closer intimacy.” I stroked her face softly. “I haven’t had a woman to care for in a very long time. Forgive me if I’m rusty. I am trying to meet your needs as much as I can.”
She swallowed heavily and started on the next bag of groceries. “I appreciate the effort, and I am grateful, but that doesn’t change the facts. No matter how gilded you make the cage, it’s still a prison.”
“I really wish things hadn’t turned out this way. But I will do whatever it takes to keep you safe, Kierra. Even if you hate me for it.”
“Even if it kills me, my soul?”
“I think you’re stronger than that.” I pray you’re stronger … but I couldn’t say it. Didn’t dare let my guard down or I’d want to take her in my arms and do whatever it took to make her feel better. Or tear her clothes off and fuck her brains out again.
I shifted my aching cock as I walked over to stare out the window. How the hell am I going to give her time when everything about her makes me hard and needy
