long day and night and he was beginning to feel the fatigue take over. “Allison?” “Mmmhmm?” “Why did you shoot my brother?” It was the one question still nagging at him. If she had no intention of killing him, then why? She rolled over and looked up at him. “I was feeling desperate. After weeks of trying to hunt my brother, I was no closer to finding him. I feared I was running out of time. So I took a risk and shot at your pack, hoping that when you captured me, I’d find out something—anything that would help me find Brody.” “That was quite a risk.” She shrugged. “He’s my brother. I’d do anything to save him.” Diego thought about this. Her plan had been insane at best. But it had worked. It seemed his mate was going to keep him on his toes. “Diego?” “Yes, beautiful?” “Tell me about her.” “Who?” She touched his cheek and he turned and kissed her hand. “The first woman you tried to take as a mate. What happened?” He closed his eyes. This was not the conversation he ever wanted to have with her. But she answered his question so he owed her the same. “She left me not too long after we agreed to bond. When I went after her to bring her home she shot me.” Allison gasped. “Why in the world?” “That is the million dollar question I guess. And one I never got the answer to. I died the night she shot me.” “I’m so sorry,” she said. “No, I mean that literally. She nicked my heart and it quit beating. If not for my brother and his EMT skills, I wouldn’t be here today.” “What a bitch. Where is she now?” “Why? You want to go beat her up?” he smiled at her outrage. “How about an arrow through her nasty heart. Remember, I do have skills.” “How do you know I didn’t deserve it?” “If you were willing to do the whole mate thing with her I seriously doubt you deserved to die.” He stared at her for half a heart beat. Aww screw it . He pulled her into his arms and snuggled her so close they were almost one. She’d sleep in his arms whether he slept or not. He didn’t want a night to pass she didn’t feel how much she meant to him. “Go to sleep, Allison. It’s been a long couple of days and we’ve got plenty to do tomorrow.” “Okay, Diego. But just so you know I’m going to dream about hunting her. And I’m going to be very happy about it when I catch her.” Diego laughed. God this woman made him so happy. Diego kissed her one last time and then wrapped his leg around her hips. “Fine, beautiful. You dream about her. But remember who won okay. If things didn’t turn out the way they did, you and I wouldn’t be here right now. So as far as I see it, I owe her now. “You’re crazy,” she mumbled. “Right back at you, beautiful. Right back at you.”
Chapter Eleven
“Wake up, Romeo. I’m ready to play.” She whispered in Diego’s ear trying to rouse him from his deep sleep. She’d crept out of bed as soon as she woke and looked out the window. The clock read 4:30 am and she didn’t believe it. It had taken the faint light of the sun just below the horizon to convince her. They’d been asleep for something like sixteen hours. Now she wanted Diego to wake up too. She was still hungry. Not as desperate as she’d been in the shower, but sleeping next to his warm, hot body made her dream all kinds of wicked things. Now she wanted to act on them. But he wasn’t budging. There had to be something she could do to wake him up. That’s when the creative light bulb went off. She scrambled up on the bed and pulled the covers back from Diego’s body. As she’d discovered when she woke, he was as hard this morning as he’d been when they went to bed. She wondered what he was dreaming about. With him so deep in sleep and laid out gloriously naked, she wanted to take some time to savor him. She ran her hand across the ridged expanse of his abdomen, tracing each indentation
