in Italy and let some hottie be my sugar daddy.â
Joelle and I laughed. âWell,â Joelle said, âI know Iâm going home. Iâm transferring to State in the fall, and Iâm ready to move out of my parentsâ house.â
I thought about school. âIâm an art major,â I finally said, âbut I lost my scholarship just before I came to Europe.â
âOh, that sucks!â
I nodded. âYeah. But I mean, I could always get loans. Thatâs how Iâm paying for this trip, actually,â I admitted.
Joelle nodded. âLoans are worth it, if you really want your degree.â
I turned to Sarah. âWhat about going to school? Is that something youâve thought about?â
She shrugged, looking down. âNot really. My dadââshe pausedââhe always said I was too stupid.â Sarah swallowed nervously.
âYouâre not stupid. Look, I know I havenât known you that long, but youâre great, Sarah. You could totally do anything you want.â
Joelle nodded, leaning forward. âCamieâs right. Youâve got a chance to reinvent yourself without your dad around to stop you. Take it!â
Sarah looked at us curiously. âWhat do you mean?â
Joelle spread her arms wide, almost knocking over her glass of water. âYouâre young, youâre vibrant, and youâre here in Europe with the money you saved up from babysitting. Daddy isnât here to tell you what to do, and thatâs something you should take advantage of.â
Sarah sat up a little taller. âYou think I should go to school?â
âIf thatâs what you want. But you could do other things too . . . even nanny again!â I offered.
Sarah looked thoughtful. âI did enjoy it . . . most of the time.â
The waiter appeared with our food, cutting the conversation short. After heâd gone, I smiled. âI guess none of us have to figure it out right now!â
Joelle nodded. âRight now, we just need to figure out where weâre going to put all this food.â
Sarah stared at the heaping plate in front of her and groaned. âGod, Iâm going to be so fat by the end of this trip.â
âYou arenât fat,â Joelle and I spoke in unison, and all three of us burst out laughing. Joelle lifted her water glass, and Sarah and I followed suit.
âHereâs to travel!â
We clinked, laughing, and I pushed aside my worries about what Iâd do when this trip was over. It wasnât over yet, I reminded myself as I dug into my food. I didnât have to make any decisions just yet.
Walking back to the apartment with our arms linked, we started singing âThatâs amore!â The people we passed probably thought we were drunk, but for once, I didnât care. It was fun to forget about everything for a little while, and I really was having a good time with Joelle and Sarah.
A couple of blocks before we got home, Sarah hopped up onto the smooth white marble surrounding a fountain decorated with leaping fish and swirling carvings. She tugged on our hands, and after a minute, Joelle followed her up. Laughing, I stayed on the ground.
âWhat are you doing?â
Sarah twirled carefully on the wet stone. âEnjoying myself. What are
you
doing, Camie?â
âCome on, Camie, the waterâs fine!â Joelle laughed.
âI donât want to find out how the water is!â
Sarah leaned forward. âIt wonât kill you to have a little fun.â
She was right. Trying to ignore the stares of the people on the street around us, I scrambled up onto the fountain beside the girls. Sarah flung her arm across my shoulders, and I giggled self-consciously. âEveryoneâs staring.â
âSo what?â Sarah dropped her hands and did a little shimmy with her hips. âWhen will you ever have the chance to dance on a fountain in Italy?â
