officer ran off, leaping to the ground and sprinting around behind the bleachers. Eva could hear her calling to her partner as she ran.
âWhatâs Leslie doing up there?â Keith asked. âDo you think sheââ
âI donât know
what
I think.â Eva felt herself shaking so hard her teeth chattered. She stumbled toward the bleachers and sat down. âLeslie had a look on her face. Such a weird smile.â
The police officers returned. Leslie walked between them, looking very frightened. Jeremy came up behind them, a confused expression on his face.
âWe need you to tell us what you saw,â the policewoman said to Leslie.
âI didnât see
any
thing!â Leslie declared.
âThen why did you run?â the policeman asked.
âBecause I was scared,â Leslie explained. âI mean, Iâm just standing up there, right? Then all of a sudden Eva is pointing at me. And two cops start chasing me like Iâm some kind of criminal!â
âWhat were you doing up there?â Eva asked.
âI wanted to see how the video was going. Okay?â Leslieâs face flushed. âI couldnât help it. I know Iâm not in it, but I couldnât stay away.â She shrugged. âWhen I got here, all I saw was a bunch of people running around in a panic.â
âDo you know what happened to Taniaâs body?â the policewoman asked.
âI told you, I â¦â Leslie broke off, her eyes wide in surprise. âWhat?â she gasped. âTaniaâs
body?
What are you
talking
about?â
âTania is dead,â Eva told her. Her voice breaking, she described what had occurred. âAre you sure you didnât see what happened to her, Leslie?â
Stunned, Leslie shook her head. âI told you, I saw everybody running around. I never saw Tania.â
Is Leslie telling the truth? Eva wondered. She seems totally shocked about Tania. But after all, she
does
want to be an actress.
As the police began asking more questions, Eva started to shiver. The rain had picked up and so had the wind.
But itâs not the weather, Eva thought.
Somethingâs wrong, I can feel it.
She glanced around at the group. Leslie stillseemed shocked. So did Keith. Jeremy stared at the ground, a dazed expression on his face.
Everybodyâs having the right reaction, Eva thought.
But someone is faking.
Someone here is lying.
Eva shivered again. Her weird feelings usually just told her when something wasnât right.
This time, it told her that someone was lying.
But who? she wondered, glancing around again. Who is it? And what are they lying about?
Footsteps pounded loudly on the concrete. Sandy suddenly appeared. Rain plastered his light-brown hair to his head, and he gasped for breath.
âWhere have
you
been?â Jeremy demanded.
âLooking â¦â Sandy bent over and gulped in some air. âLooking for Tania.â He took some more deep breaths, then straightened up and slicked the rain out of his hair. âI thought sheâd be waiting in my car, but â¦â
Jeremyâs head snapped up. âWhat did you say?â
âHow could she be waiting in your car?â Keith asked. âSheâs dead, remember?â
Sandy glanced away, looking uncomfortable.
Jeremy stepped toward him. âYou know something, Sandy! What is it? What are you hiding?â
âIf you know something, youâd better tell us,â the policewoman warned. âI donât need to tell you this is serious. You could get in a lot of trouble if you donât tell us everything.â
âOkay, okay, Iâll tell you!â Sandy wiped rainwaterfrom his hair again. âLook, this wasnât supposed to happen, okay?â
âWhat
wasnât?â Jeremy demanded. âWhat are you talking about?â
âIt started out as a joke. Tania and I cooked it up,â Sandy explained. âThe idea was,
