said quietly.
Amelia appeared confused. âI donât understand.â She studied her sister. âYouâre not married? You didnât come with your husband.â
âNo.â Rachelâs voice sounded hoarse. âMirandaâs uncle brought me.â
âHer fiancé was a jealous madman,â Miranda said. âRachel learned this before it was too late. She called off the wedding, but JordanâJordan Sinclairâwas persistent.â She paused to pat Rachelâs arm. âHe was more than persistent. He threatened her! She feared for her own life, and Aunt Bessâs.â The young woman placed an arm around her friendâs shoulders. âSo she left ... we left, and, well, here we are.â
âOh, Rachel,â Amelia whispered. âIâm so sorry you had to go through that.â
Rachelâs tears were real. The mention of Jordanâs name had brought back the pain.
âIâm sorry, Rach,â Miranda said softly.
She nodded. âIâm all right.â
âSo this Jordan Sinclair fellow was bothering you,â Daniel said.
Rachel looked at him. âYes.â She didnât blink. It was the truth. Jordan Sinclair bothered her still. He had stolen her heart, then trampled it to pieces when heâd run away with his widow.
Daniel continued to study her. âAnd your aunt?â
âOh, Aunt Bess is fine,â Rachel replied. âShe has George to protect her.â
Amelia smiled. âHas she married him?â
âNot yet,â Rachel replied, âbut soon, I think. Right before I left, I sensed that she was weakening.â
âGood for George!â Seeing her husbandâs puzzled look, Amelia explained, âGeorge Bentley is a kindly gentleman who is in love with my aunt. Heâs been trying to marry her for years. I think she loves him, but she refuses to admit it. Look how long it took before sheâd allow George to court her.â
âI hope she marries him soon,â Rachel said. George Bentley was one of the few males left in the world that Rachel trusted. He was perfect for Aunt Bess. Rachelâs experience with Jordan had made her leery of all men. She transferred her gaze to her sisterâs husband, who had moved to stand near his wife.
âHowâs Father?â Rachel asked.
âYou havenât seen him?â Amelia said.
Rachel shook her head. âWe arrived yesterday afternoon.â She blushed and avoided Danielâs glance. âI lay down for a nap at the hotel, and I was so tired that I slept through supper.â
âFatherâs been away,â her sister told her. âDaniel will find out for you if heâs returned.â She lovingly caressed her husbandâs shoulder. âWonât you, darling?â
His expression, which had been grim, softened as he studied his wife. âWhatever you want, love.â
He dislikes me, Rachel thought, knowing that it was true. She decided to pretend otherwise. âI appreciate it, Daniel. Youâre a good brother-in-law and a true gentleman,â she said with just a hint of mockery.
His blue eyes flashed with anger as he met her gaze. She nodded, smiling, then turned her attention back to her sister.
âYouâll stay with us, of course,â Amelia said without expecting an answer. âWe have plenty of room. You can go to the mission later. I think, though, youâll find it quite comfortable here.â
Rachel saw Danielâs look of dismay. âShe might like it better at the mission,â he said carefully.
Amelia looked at him with surprise. âYou donât mean that! Rachel will like it here well enough.â
âAmelia,â Rachel said softly, âI donât plan to return to Baltimore. My home is here now. I canât live with you. Itâs not rightââ
âYes, Amelia, sheââ Daniel began.
âWhy not?â Amelia
