know what to do with herself some days.
“Okay, don’t answer.” He said. “Now, let’s get going. We have a lot of baking to do.”
CHAPTER 15 BACK TO BUSINESS
“This is a nice page that you have.” Frank told Emmy as she showed him the homepage of her online business. “It really should not be dead for so long. Trust me, in a few minutes, I could be done with this.”
She laughed. “Thanks.” She said. “I made that with Audrina.” She went on. “She’s a great friend.”
“Is she the girl who’s currently in Guatemala?”
“I don’t think I also told you about that.”
“Now I feel like such a stalker.” He said. “Again, Em, you know how news travels fast.”
“Yeah, well…” she took a deep breath as she mixed lemon juice with her butter cream mixture. She was going to make some of her famous lemon cupcakes. They always helped her get a good start. “I wonder what else people are saying about her.”
“Well…not all good things, you can expect.” He said. “But don’t worry, I don’t really believe them.”
“I wonder what makes it so easy for you not to believe them.”
“It’s simple,” he said as he looked her in the eyes, “it’s because I have you. How else can I believe other people when I got you?”
“You know…sometimes, I feel like you’re such a romantic but that you’ve told those lines to other girls, too.”
“Oh trust me, I haven’t.” He smiled. “So…are you making lemon cupcakes?”
“Yes,” she said. “They’re my favorites, actually. They always remind me of my mother. And I guess, they’re unique. Some people feel that lemon is too tangy or too citrusy but I like how it blends with the cream and the butter. You’d love it, trust me.”
“I know I will.” He said. “So, what’s the very first thing you learned to cook?” He asked as Emmy placed the cupcakes in the oven.
“Hmm…” Emmy said, wiping her hands on a paper towel. “I believe it was this seafood spaghetti. I was six, we were at Beaches and Coffee and my mom decided that it would be fun if I learned how to cook. So, I tried to help her cook the pasta and those seafood but let’s just say I’m not really a good cook as much as I’m a good baker.” She laughed and he did, too. She went on. “Eventually, I learned how to make lemon meringue pie, lemon cupcakes, banana bread, and apple pies. My dad loves apple pies and he often baked some for my mom.”
“That’s sweet.”
“Yeah,” she said. “They loved each other a lot.” She went on, “But that’s over. My mom’s long been gone.” She took a deep breath. “Frank, do you like…believe that sometimes, the dreams we dream of are telling us something?”
“Well, I believe I’ve found my dream in you—“
“Stop.” She quipped. “I’m serious. I mean…do you have dreams that just you know, you feel like they’re more than just dreams? That you should actually listen to what you’re being told.”
“Why? What have you been dreaming about?”
She took a deep breath. “I’ve just been having recurring dreams about Ruby and Annabeth. I know it’s silly but they’re telling me to be careful. They said that I should be careful about the people around me and somehow, I don’t know how to feel about that. I mean, I wish they could just tell me what it is that I need to know.”
“But Emmy, they’re dead. They really can’t tell you anything, can they?”
“But their words seem so real!”
“Yeah,” he said, “but they’re dead. And you’re alive. I know that sometimes, you want to look for hope in the weirdest of places. Everyone does that. I can’t even blame you for doing so because you’ve obviously been through so much. Sometimes, we may feel like dreams are more than just dreams but you can’t really rely on those things, you know? But you know what I believe in? I believe that you’re capable of living in this world and not just in your dreams. In fact,” he showed her
