happened to Sarahâs mother?â
Carrieâs mouth formed a grim line. âTheyâre divorced. She left him. She left Sarah, too.â
âI canât imagineââ
âNeither can I.â Carrie leaned into the wind. âHe told me so I wouldnât say something awkward to Sarah.â
Pearl couldnât imagine a woman abandoning her child, though for a short time during her pregnancy, sheâd considered giving up Toby for adoption. In those dark days, sheâd feared Franklin Dean and sheâd had no way to support herself. Her friends at Swanâs Nest had come to her rescue and sheâd be forever grateful.
Carrie broke into her thoughts. âMattâs wife broke his heart when she left. You can see it in his eyes.â
Pearl understood too well. Sheâd seen that look when theyâd first met. âHow long ago was it?â
âA year or so.â As they turned toward the school, Carrie squinted against the sun. âI know Matt likes me. Heâs just scared. He needs to know Iâd never hurt him.â
âOf course, you wouldnât.â
Carrie bit her lip, then released it. âHe needs convincing, thatâs all.â
Pearl didnât doubt her cousinâs sincerity, only her reasoning. Matt hadnât shown even a spark of interest. âI donât know.â
âI do,â Carrie insisted. âMatt needs a push.â
Pearl loved her cousin, but she had strong feelings about pushing anyone. Even before the attack, sheâd been pressured by Franklin Dean and sheâd resented it. She considered sharing her doubts with Carrie, but what did she know about men and courtship? Her perspective was skewed and always would be. Carrieâs instincts had to be better than her own. âWhat do you have in mind?â she asked.
âI donât know. Any ideas?â
âNot a one.â
Carrieâs eyes twinkled. âHow about a supper party? I could invite a few people over.â
Pearl couldnât bear the thought. Carrie would invite single men. Theyâd tease and flirt with her.
âItâs perfect!â Carrie declared. âYouâre new in town. The party will be in your honor.â
âNo, Carrie. Iâm not ready for something like that.â
âPlease?â She made a winsome face.
How could Pearl say no? She owed Carrie for the food on her table, the roof over her head. She wanted to say yes, but she croaked with panic. âIâll think about it.â
âItâll be great,â Carrie insisted. âItâs just what Matt needs. And you, too!â
Right now, Pearl needed to collect her thoughts. Theyâd reached the school. Behind the main building she saw a cottage. She tightened her grip on the handle of the carriage. âIs that Miss Marloweâs house?â
âIt is,â Carrie answered. âIsnât it charming?â
Pearl loved the little house. Ivy climbed the porch railing, and the gabled roof boasted a turret. As they walked up the path with the baby carriage, Miss Marlowe herselfcame out the door. Pearl saw a woman in her forties with chestnut hair and ivory skin. Petite and wearing a pea-green dress, she looked more like a leprechaun than the founder of a prestigious girlsâ academy. Pearl relaxed, but only until the carriage hit a rut and Toby started to fuss.
âOh dear,â she murmured. If he didnât settle, sheâd have to pick him up. Meeting Miss Marlowe with her son tucked in the carriage would have been challenging. Meeting her with a crying infant in her arms made Pearl shake.
Miss Marlowe greeted them with a wave. âHello, ladies!â
âBe brave.â Carrie touched her hand. âSheâs going to love you.â
âAnd if she doesnât?â
Carrie shot her a look of confidence. âIâll still love you, and so will Toby. Donât be afraid. Weâre in this
