drink. âIâve never been there.â
I didnât know what to say to that, so I sipped my drink, too.
âThe Colonel said that Elvis is cominâ in tomorrow.â
âI thought one of them would call and let me know,â I said.
âParker said Elvis tried to call you at home,â Frank said. âSo the Colonel decided to call me and leave you a message.â
Apparently Frank didnât object to being a message center the way Entratter did.
âHeâll be at the Riviera,â Frank went on.
âIâll call the hotel and see when heâs gettinâ in,â I said. âIâll be there.â
Frank eyed me for a minute and then said, âWhatâs goinâ on?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âThereâs somethinâ else on your mind besides Elvis Presley.â
âWhat makes you say that?â
âCome on, Eddie,â Frank said. âWeâve been friends long enough. I can tell when my friends have somethinâ on their minds.â
âSpeaking of friends I heard Dinoâs cominâ to town,â I said.
âDonât change the subject.â
Caught.
âMy buddy Danny Bardiniâs havinâ some trouble and I promised to help him out.â
âSo youâll have to split your time between Elvis and Danny?â
âLooks like.â
âGet some help,â he suggested. âIâll fly Jerry in for you, if you want.â
âActually, Jerryâs here and heâs already on the job.â
âWell, thatâs good.â
âIt should be, but Iâve already lost track of him.â
âHeâll turn up,â Frank said. âJerry can take care of himself.â
âI know that,â I said, âitâs just that he hasnât even had time to settle in, yet.â
âWell,â Frank said, âyouâve got the rest of the day to find him and make your arrangements for tomorrow.â
âThen I better get to it.â
I sipped the drink again and put the glass down. Frank walked me to the door with his arm around my shoulder.
âLet me know if you need any help,â he said, as we opened the door, âwith either problem. Iâm available.â
âIâll remember that, Frank.â
âAnd yes, Dino is cominâ in. In fact, heâll be here tomorrow night.â
âGood,â I said, âI havenât seen him in a while.â
âLetâs try to all have dinner,â Frank said, âif you can squeeze us in.â
âIâll try,â I promised.
âSee ya, Eddie.â
He closed the door and I went to the elevator. I had the rest of the day to find Jerry, and had no idea where to look.
SEVENTEEN
I went down to the lobby and checked with the front desk for messages. Finding none, I asked the desk clerk â who had the name âDEREKâ on his name tag â âCan I use your phone?â
âSure, Mr G.â
He turned the phone around to me so I could make an outside call. I knew if Elvis was checking into the Riviera the next day theyâd know exactly when he was coming in. I knew the concierge at the Riviera because he had once worked at the Sands.
âHey, Eddie G.,â Tommy Harper said, glad to hear my voice. âWhatâs shakinâ?â
âHey, Tommy, how you doinâ?â
âCanât complain,â Harper said. âWhat can I do for you?â
âI need a favor, man.â
âSure, anything,â Tommy said. âBut I canât believe that Eddie G., whoâs got this whole town wired, needs my help.â
âThis has to do with a famous guest of yours,â I told him.
âUh-oh,â he said, lowering his voice to a conspiratorial tone, âdonât tell me itâs about Elvis Presley.â
âIt is.â
âEddie, man,â he said, âI canât give out any information about
