that.â
âIâm supposed to meet with him at your hotel,â I said. âI only need to know when heâs cominâ in. He tried to call me at home and I wasnât there.â
âElvis calls you at home?â
âThis wouldâve been the first time, but yeah.â
He hesitated, then asked, âIs this on the level, Eddie? Because it could cost me my job.â
âIt wonât,â I said. âItâs totally on the level. All I need is his time of arrival, so I know when to be there myself.â
He hesitated again, then said â lowering his voice â âOK, itâs noon. Heâs due to check in at noon.â
âThanks, Tommy.â
âDonât hang me out to dry, Eddie,â he said. âIf I see photographers hereââ
âYou wonât,â I said. âNot because of me, anyway.â
âYeah, I know,â Harper said, âitâll leak out, anyway, but â¦â
âI wonât say a word, Tommy,â I promised. âI swear.â
âOK, Eddie.â
âThanks for helpinâ me out,â I said. âNow I owe you one.â
âIâll call it in,â Harper said. âTake care.â
I hung up and said to Derek, âThanks for the use of the phone.â
âAny time, Mr G.,â he said. âHey, how come they donât give you an office?â
âPit bosses donât get offices,â I said, âbut thanks for the thought.â
I took a walk through the casino floor, exchanged some greetings with Red Skelton, who was not playing the Sands but had chosen to gamble there, and Alan King, who was watching.
I went to the Garden Room for coffee, then checked back with the desk for messages. I was hoping Jerry would simply call the hotel, and not Jack Entratterâs number. Or maybe heâd call Frank, who would then call down to the desk looking for me.
I went back to the Garden Room and decided to have a piece of pie this time with my coffee. I was finishing the last bite when the waitress came over with a phone, plugged it in and set it down on the table.
âA call for you, Eddie.â
âThanks, Kitty.â
She smiled and walked away. I watched her swaying butt as I picked up the receiver.
âYeah, this is Eddie.â
âI told you,â Jack Entratter said, âdidnât I tell you?â
âTell me what, Jack?â
âYour buddy Jerry called here lookinâ for you.â
âYou shouldâve told him to call down to the front desk,â I said. âHe wouldâve found me.â
âWell, he couldnât do that,â Jack said. âYou see, heâs only allowed one phone call.â
âOne call?â
âThatâs right,â Jack said. âHeâs in jail.â
I closed my eyes and thought, Jesus.
âFor what?â I asked.
âNo half measures for your good buddy,â Jack said. âHeâs been arrested and charged with murder!â
EIGHTEEN
D etective Hargrove had a self-satisfied look on his face as he came to fetch me from the front hall of police headquarters.
âSo, one of you finally did it, huh, Eddie?â he asked.
âIâll need to see the evidence, detective, before I agree to that.â
The look slipped and I knew he didnât have the evidence he needed to make the charge stick.
âCome with me,â he said.
I followed him down several familiar halls. We were headed for the interrogation rooms. Iâd been in them enough times before to know.
He stopped in front of a door and turned to face me.
âOK, your buddyâs inside,â he said. âIt would benefit him if you could get him to talk.â
âBenefit you, you mean.â
âYou want to talk to him, or not?â
âI do.â
âThen be smart, Eddie,â Hargrove said. âI knew one of you would slip up one day. I sort of hoped it would be
