your head?â
Well, first you should scream. Then you should run.
Because boiling oneâs headâwell, it isnât much fun.)
Â
So perhaps youâd assume that Katrina Katrell
would run away screaming and yelling, as well.
But no, that was not what our heroine did.
She didnât run off or go flipping her lid.
Â
She stayed where she was. She was perfectly still.
âSorry,â she said, âbut I donât think you will.â
Â
The creature looked up. There were tears in its eyes,
while under the tears, was a look of surprise.
âOh no?â said the beast, as it rose to its feet.
âJust come a bit closer. Youâll see what I eat!â
Â
The creature stood up, and Katrina could see,
she barely came up to the top of its knee!
Â
This creature was big . No, bigger than big,
and covered with hair like a velvety wig.
Â
It had sinewy arms and a generous shape,
resembling some sort of unusual ape.
Its shoulders were sloped. Its knuckles were long.
It might well have come from the Kingdom of Kong.
Â
But what made young Katrina ogle and stare,
were the ribbons and bows in the animalâs hair!
Â
âYouâre a girl!â she exclaimed; it came out in a shout.
It was such a surprise, she just blurted it out.
Â
âSo what,â said the beast, âand what about you?
Maybe you hadnât noticed, but youâre a girl, too!
And girlies like you, I usually squish,
because girl à la mode is my favorite dish.
You see, my name is Winnie. Iâm a windigo beast!
Iâm fiercest in all of the westâ and the east!â
Â
âOkay,â said Katrina. âSure, I understand.â
Then she took a step forward and put out her hand.
âWell, my nameâs Katrina, Katrina Katrell.
Itâs a pleasure to meet you. Hereâs wishing you well.â
Â
âBah!â cried the beast. âGet away from me, kid!
You come any closer, youâll regret that you did!â
Â
âCâmon,â said Katrina, âyou might act like a brute,
but youâre not fooling me. See, Iâm pretty astute.
Youâre not really so vicious, not really so bad.
Any nitwit could tell, youâre justâ¦kinda sad.â
Â
âOh, reeeeaaally?â said Winnie.
âAnd should I be impressed?
You think Iâm unhappy? You think Iâm depressed?!
That I lie around weeping all day and all night?
Well, listen here, missyâ¦Youâre perfectly right!â
Winnie went back to her bellowing moans,
to her blubbers,
her whimpers,
her grumbles, and groans.
Â
âPlease,â said Katrina, âJust cool it! Calm down!
Your tears are so thick, I could practically drown!
Just take a deep breath and try to relax.
Then tell me what happened. Iâm after the facts.
Â
The zorgles who live hereâwhere did they go?
Because Iâve got a hunch that maybe you know.
Was it some sort of magic, or maybe a curse?
Were they kidnapped by piratesâ¦
or burglarsâ¦
o r worse ?â
Â
âThe zorgles!â wept Winnie. âI remember them well.
âMy friends,â she said sadly. âAw, gee, they were swell!
Which is why itâs so awful, about the attack.
They were eaten , Katrina. Theyâll never come back!
They ate every zorgle in Zorgamazoo!
They ate everyone upâand my family, too!
They had tentacles! Wings! They had terrible claws!
And theyâll eat us up, too, with their slobbery jaws!â
Â
Before Winnie could finish, before she could try,
she stoppedâ¦because something went crackle , nearby.
Â
âTheyâre back!â Winnie sniveled. âWeâre done for!
Weâre doomed!
Weâll be eaten, Katrina! Devoured! Consumed!â
Â
Then came a voice. It was husky and gruff.
âI found you!â It wheezed, with a huff and a puff.
Â
To Winnie, Katrina seemed terribly brave,
as she held up her hand in a casual
