the wet patch on the seat, and ran with me to the door and said, âMum, can you have him for the weekend? Thanks,â and ran back to the car. Gran had to take me to her salsa class because she hadnât got a babysitter. And I never saw Chris again.
After that, my mum didnât introduce me much to herboyfriends. When she was seeing someone I mostly got packed off to Granâs. Sometimes they didnât even know about me and sometimes she would tell them I was her little brother. They didnât last long, anyway.
Patrick unfolds himself from the chair and towers above me. Itâs like looking up at a giant. âIâm going to have a word with Helen and Archie, and then Iâd like you to apologise to them,â he says. âThink you can do that?â
Apologise to Archie? To
Archie?
He must be joking. But he leaves me alone before I can say anything.
Iâm just looking at the computer and wondering if Claireâs written back â probably not so clever to check â when Archieâs mum comes in. Sheâs got a big smile on her face and I can see thereâs no escaping her.
âSo . . . Tyler. . .â she says. âWeâve all missed you so much all these years.â
Oh yeah? No one came to look for me.
âYour dad in particular â heâll be so happy to see you again. Poor Danny, itâs been very hard for him.â
Hard for him? What about me? I have to bite my tongue not to say anything.
âMy parents arenât really in touch with him, but wouldnât you like to meet him again?â she asks. âYou must have thought about him a lot over the years.â
For Christâs sake. Iâm not going to discuss with her what I might feel about someone who never evenbothered to send me a birthday card. Her smile is wobbling a bit. Sheâs probably wondering if I know how to talk.
âPerhaps youâd like me to call him?â she asks.
âNo,â I say. âIâm not interested. Iâm just staying here while I have to and then Iâll go back to my gran and my mum, and you can all forget about me again.â
âNo one ever forgot about you,â she says, but Iâve had enough. I push past her and stomp up the stairs.
Patrick is talking to Helen and Archie. I pause outside and I hear him say, âTylerâs come here with almost nothing, Archie, and youâre not to interfere with his possessions,â and then I push open the door. Everyoneâs looking at me, and I can see Archieâs annoyed that I heard him being told off.
âSorry Helen,â I mumble. âSorry Archie.â I drag his name out and sound as un-sorry as I can.
âI think you can do better than that,â says Patrick. âTry again.â
Jesus. Itâs like being back in reception class.
âUmmm . . . Iâm really sorry, Helen, I shouldnât have taken your mobile without asking. I only did it because I needed to make an urgent phone call and it wonât happen again. Maybe I can repay you for the cost of the call. I promise never to take your stuff without asking again.â
She looks a bit stunned and says, âThank you forthe apology. Of course you can use the phone whenever you want, darling.â
âNo he canât,â says Patrick, âDonât you remember what Louise said? No calls.â
Iâm hoping that heâll have forgotten that I havenât apologised properly to Archie, but oh no, that would be too much to hope for.
âAnd next, your cousin,â he says. I think heâs really enjoying this. Sadist.
âIâm very, very sorry Archie that I pulled your hair and I do hope you are not seriously hurt and Iâll try never to pull your hair again,â I say through gritted teeth.
âMuch better,â says Patrick. âNotice, Archie, that Tyler has left himself a large escape clause. Youâd better be careful how you approach
