Hawk began.
âLook! Hereâs Sal!â I said, cutting her off. I knew Hawk meant well, and I was grateful. But Iâd told her about my momâs accident. She should have understood.
Sal slid in next to M. âWhatâs up?â I hadnât noticed before that she had a couple of new purple stripes in her red hair.
Catman and M just kept munching sandwiches.
âWe need your help,â I started. âWe need to get eight people together for a trail ride.â
âHello? Unless Amigo grew overnight, heâs still too little to ride,â Sal said.
âI think a trail ride sounds like fun,â Hawk said. âI have not ridden Towaco for a week.â
âWell, thatâs the thing,â Kaylee said. âWe need you to ride one of the horses at Happy Trails.â
âHappy Trails?â Salâs face looked like sheâd swallowed lemons. âThat dump? Iâd never let Amigo play with those horsesâdefinitely wrong side of the tracks.â
âItâs important, Sal.â I glanced at Kaylee and got a go-ahead nod. âWe think theyâre mistreating one of their horses, maybe more. We need to see all eight horses, so we have to have eight riders.â
âMan, that burns me!â Sal reached over and ate one of Mâs pickles. He raised his eyebrow at her. âCount me in!â
âThe same for me,â Hawk said.
âGreat!â I couldnât believe it was this easy. Four down. Four to go. âWeâll meet right after school and goââ
âAfter school?â Hawk asked. âI canât do it right after school.â
âWhy not?â Kaylee asked.
Hawk stared at her fingernails and shifted in her seat, stealing a glance up at Catman. âI . . . I told Mother I would do something after school.â
âHawk!â I cried. âCanât you tell your mom youâll do it tomorrow?â
Hawk shook her head.
âSo whatâs so important?â Sal asked.
Hawk took a deep breath. âI have a job. A modeling job.â She almost swallowed the last words.
âVictoria, thatâs so tight!â Sal shouted. She turned around to Summerâs table. âHey, you guys! Did you know Vic here got herself a modeling job?â
Summer wheeled around, frowning. âWhere?â
Hawk turned sheepishly. âIt is no big deal. Really. Ford Models. It is all Motherâs idea.â
Summer dropped her spoon.
âHey, isnât that where you applied over Christmas vacation, Summer?â Sal asked. âFord Models? Yeah, that was it, right?â
âI donât remember,â Summer lied. You could tell by the way she wouldnât look at Hawk.
âYou are so lucky!â Kristine, another girl in our class, exclaimed. âAnd they pay for taking your picture?â
Kristine is pretty smart. I had to think she knew the answer to that one. I wondered if sheâd asked it just to make Summer even more miserable.
âI will not model regularly,â Hawk explained. âOnly for special jobs.â
âSpecial jobs, huh?â Grant repeated. âSounds great, Victoria. Way to go!â
âYeah, Hawk. Congratulations.â I tried to mean it. Hawk is probably my best friend. I wanted to be happy for her. I was, really. Itâs just that I knew nobody would ever pay money to take a picture of me. And I was the one who could have used that extra money. Hawk has two divorced parents who try to outdo each other by shoving money at her.
âI am really sorry,â Hawk said, getting up from the table. âIs the stable open in the evening? I should be finished by five oâclock. Mother could drop me off at Happy Trails.â
âTheyâre open until eight on Mondays,â Kaylee said. âLetâs do it!â
âWorks for me,â I said. âGives me a little time for Dad and the invention.â
âIâm in.
