we’re trying to say, baby, is that we’ve loved you for a long time but have been too stupid and scared to do anything about it. Now that you’re having our baby we want you to move in with us. We’ll get married as soon as it can be arranged.”
Silence filled the room. A part of Rachel thrilled at the thought of being married to them. Another part of her wondered if they really did love her or if they only wanted to marry her because she’d gotten pregnant.
“Let me see if I understand you.” She stood and circled the table. “You loved me but have managed to avoid me for almost two years. You didn’t want to become involved with me because you thought I might be like your ex-girlfriend, who you discovered didn’t love you and only wanted a ménage. And,” she raised her hand to silence them when they both started to speak, “now that you know I’m pregnant with your baby, you’ve decided to put all that aside and marry me anyway. Maybe you want to keep an eye on me so I won’t go behind your back and have an abortion?”
Boone jumped from his chair, sending it flying backward. “It’s not like that, damn it! We know you’re not like her. I admit, we’ve been stupid. But we love you, Rachel, you and the baby. We want to spend our lives with you, take care of you. We want lots of babies with you.”
Rachel stood with her arms folded over her chest. “So if I hadn’t gotten pregnant, would we still be having this conversation?”
Chase stood and approached her. “Probably not now,” he admitted. “But we would have eventually.” He grinned at her. “We wouldn’t have been able to resist you much longer.”
Rachel eyed them both warily. “I don’t believe you, and I’m perfectly capable of taking care of myself and my baby. I’m going to go get something to eat from the diner. Fix my door.”
Ignoring their dumbfounded looks, Rachel slipped on her shoes, grabbed her purse and headed out the broken door.
“Damn it, Rachel. This isn’t over.”
She heard Boone’s shout as she stepped around the door, but ignored it. She needed some time alone. And she needed to get away from both of them before she did something really, really stupid. Again.
Chapter 4
Rachel climbed the stairs to her apartment, smiling when she saw the new door. Wow. They worked fast.
She blinked when she noticed the new lock. How was she supposed to get in? Hesitantly, she reached for the knob. Finding it unlocked, she walked inside. Boone sat on her sofa, apparently waiting for her, her suitcases all around him.
“I didn’t see your truck. Where’s Chase?” She looked around but didn’t see him. “Why are my suitcases out here?”
Boone stood and crossed to her, leading her to the sofa.
“Did you have dinner?” he asked as he started to remove her shoes. “Here, put your feet up and rest until Chase gets back.”
Rachel pulled her feet from his grasp as he started to lift them onto the sofa. “I don’t want to put my feet up. Where’s Chase and why are my suitcases out?” She began to get a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach. “What are you two up to?”
“You’re moving in with us.”
“Like hell.”
“I’ve warned you about that mouth.”
“What are you going to do?” Rachel sneered. “Spank me?”
Boone’s eyes darkened dangerously as he leaned toward her. When he moved to nibble at her neck, she arched it, automatically giving him access as desire shot through her. Damn. She couldn’t resist him at all.
“We’ve already talked to the Doc. Our baby’s all snug and cozy, and there are lots of other ways to punish you. Don’t provoke me,” he growled and tilted her face for his kiss. “Besides, I’d rather have you in my arms.”
It seemed like forever since she’d felt him this way, but her body remembered him clearly. She moaned into his mouth when he deepened his kiss, sending her soaring as he took her mouth possessively with his. When
