could help attract young gay men to the profession too.â
Roger paused. âI think you two should stop messing around and get back to work.â He went into his office and slammed the door.
Beth shook her head and went into the lab. She would have preferred not to hurt Rogerâs feelings. He could be a total pain, but that was probably because he was lonely. She felt a little bit bad for being mean to him.
As she was heading to her bench, the phone rang.
âBeth, itâs Anna.â
âHey, whatâs up?â She started to roll up her sleeves, the phone tucked by her shoulder.
âHave you had any more entries come through for the calendar?â
âOne.â
âAny good?â
Beth picked up the photo from her desk and looked at it again. âNot bad. How about you?â
âIâve had a few, but I donât think weâve got enough for a calendarâ
âHow many have we got?â
âIâve had about twenty e-mails, but not many suitable ones. At a push, seven maybe. Thatâs assuming your new oneâs any good.â
Beth felt that was a little unfair â perhaps Anna was setting the bar too high. âSo, what are we going to do? We need to get started soon or we wonât be able to get it done in time for the next meeting. Clarissa will have a field day.â
âThereâs nothing else for it. Weâll have to keep an eye out for fit men and ask them if theyâll take part.â
âWe canât do that. Weâll look like nutters. Theyâll probably call the police.â Beth thought of Rogerâs animosity. âI donât think that would go down too well with my supervisor. Iâm on thin ice as it is.â
âWell, Iâll do it then. Just make sure you have your camera with you at all times.â
Beth shifted the phone to her other shoulder. She didnât like the idea of taking peopleâs photos without asking. âWeâll have to get their permission.â
âYou can get them to agree after youâve taken the shot. You can always show them youâre deleting them if they say no.â
It still didnât sound right. âI donât know, Anna. There must be another way. Is there an advertising avenue weâve missed?â
âI donât think so. Iâve even been hawking it around on Twitter. That got me some obscene messages, I can tell you. Thatâs after I specified that they
had
to be wearing clothes.â
Beth sighed. âOkay. When do you want to start interviewing the people youâve already got on the list?â She heard Rogerâs footsteps. âIâve got to go, Anna. See you later.â She rang off and turned round.
âStill not doing any work, Miss Tyler?â He emphasised âMissâ as though it were an insult.
âI am, thanks,â said Beth. âCan I help you with anything?â
âIâm looking for Hibs, actually.â
âHe wonât be in until later today. He did the late shift last night.â Beth gathered up some papers.
âLate shift?â
âWeâre taking it in turns to work nights, as I mentioned earlier. Weâre running two sets of experiments in parallel so that we can use both microscopes at once. At night.â
âWhat sort of experiments?â
âTime courses. Weâre looking at how the GFP-tagged proteins behave over time.â
Roger folded his arms. âI asked you to concentrate on repeating the tests you did before.â
âIâm doing those as well.â She was finding it surprisingly easy to work in the night, when the lab was quiet. As long as sheâd set her bacterial cultures growing the day before, so that they were ready by the evening, she could get on with the experiments without interruptions from anyone. She rather enjoyed it.
Roger snorted. âJust make sure you have the results I want ready in
