of the school bus and tried to hide from Mick and Darryl. But they climbed onto the bus with big grins on their faces and made their way right to me.
Mick pulled the backpack from my hands and tossed it across the bus. Then he leaned over me. He brought his big red face so close to mine, I could smell the chewing gum on his breath.
âAre you going to stand on your head again, Jacko?â he said.
âCome on, Jacko. Do it again,â Darryl said. âCome out in the aisle. Letâs see you do it again.â
âLook. The bee sting made me a little crazy,â I said. âI was in pain, you know? So give me a break.â
For some reason, that made them laugh really hard.
âWe want to hear you scream again,â Mick said. He snapped his finger against my nose.
âOW.â I flinched and jerked my head back.
âYou can do better than that,â Mick said.
âGo ahead,â Darryl echoed. âScream like a girl. Just like you did in class.â
I crossed my arms in front of me. âNo way,â I said.
Mick snapped his finger over my nose again. âCome on, Jacko. We all want to hear you scream again. That was awesome.â
âAwesome,â Darryl repeated.
âIâm going to call Charlene, and sheâll throw you off this bus,â I said.
That made them laugh even harder.
âShe canât,â Darryl said. âSheâll lose her job.â
Mick leaned over me. âPunch Me and Pinch Me got into a canoe,â he said. âPunch Me jumped into the river. Who was left in the boat?â
I rolled my eyes. âPinch Me,â I said.
âOkay.â Mick tightened his thumb and finger over my shoulder and gave me a pinch that brought tears to my eyes. But I didnât scream.
âTry again,â Darryl said. He glanced to the front to make sure Charlene wasnât watching.
âPunch Me and Pinch Me got into a canoe,â Mick said. âPinch Me jumped out. Who was left in the canoe?â
âNo one,â I said. âThe canoe sank.â
Mick balled his hand into a fist and gave my shoulder a punch â so hard, it changed my shirt size.
I gasped, but I didnât scream.
âTry again,â Darryl told him.
âPunch Me and Pinch Me got into a canoe ââ Mick started.
âPlease!â I cried. âIâve had a bad day. What can I do to make you two go pick on someone else?â
Mick grabbed my wrist. âYou wearing the cool digital watch? We can make a trade. You give me the watch â¦â
âAnd what will
you
do?â I asked.
âIâll wear it,â Mick said.
âThatâs a trade?â I cried. âI give you the watch, and you wear it?â
He nodded. Darryl laughed.
âNo trade,â I said. âI told you guys, my grandfather gave me this watch. Itâs really special to me.â
âSpecial to me, too,â Mick said, rubbing his finger over the glass.
âNo trade,â I repeated.
Mick raised his big fist. âPunch Me and Punch Me got into a canoe,â he said. âWhich one of them jumped out?â
I clenched my arm muscles, getting ready for the punch.
But Charlene came to my rescue. âMick? Darryl? Your stop!â she shouted. âOr do you want me to drive around the block so you can punch Jack some more?â
Charlene is a riot.
Mick swung his fist and gave me a tap that sent me sprawling halfway down the aisle. âSee you tomorrow,â he said.
âNot if I see you first,â I muttered.
âDid you know my family and I are moving away?â Mick asked.
âHuh? Really?â
âGuess youâre broken up about that,â Mick said. âGuess youâll miss me.â
I didnât reply.
He stared hard at me. âMaybe youâll give me that watch as a going-away present.â
âI ⦠donât think so,â I said.
He turned and the two of them shambled off
