white, orange and purple candle wax point to a scrying ritual.â She touched the red spot in the middle. âObviously whoever did this was doing so for a female.â
Alexia knew that much by the waxâred for a female, black for a male. âDidnât they need some personal effect?â
âWas your car locked?â
âNo.â They all looked at her like sheâd just admitted to a crime, so she explained, âThe lock broke a few months ago and I havenât gotten around to getting it fixed yet. Nobody breaks into cars back home.â Apparently that assumption was wrong.
Danielle shrugged. âThen access to a strand of your hair would have been easy.â
âYeah, but why go to the trouble of performing a ritual out in the open? They could have been caught. Wouldnât it have been easier to use an altar somewhere private?â
Braeden asked, âWhere was your car parked?â
âAt the museum, near the college.â
âItâs nearly Halloween.â Sean added, âThis time of year, who would think twice about some student burning candles on top of a car?â
âBut weâre talking about a small town in the Midwest. Itâs not exactly a hotbed of wizards and witches.â
âYouâd be surprised,â Danielle muttered under her breath. âIt doesnât need to be a hotbed, just takes oneââ
âOne who wants the manual,â Braeden finished his auntâs sentence.
Danielle touched the melted wax, then shook her head. âBut I donât see how this particular ritual would have helped. It was most likely repeated at an altar, with a crystal ball, bowl or mirror.â
âThen what was the point of doing this to my car?â Alexia chipped off some of the wax with a fingernail.
âTo let you, or us, know you would be followed.â
Braeden asked, âIf you didnât meet the person, did you ever talk to who wanted to hire you?â
Alexia glanced at the wax and shivered. âNot on the phone or in person. But yes, we didâ¦chat, so to speak.â
Danielleâs sharp gasp drew everyoneâs attention. âYou let down your guard to a stranger?â
âNot on purpose. But it didnât matter, he slipped through quite easily.â
âOne of the Learned sent her here.â Danielle gasped and raised a hand to her chest as if protecting her heart. âYouâve brought danger to us all.â
âThat was probably the idea to begin with.â Braeden put an arm around his aunt, pulling her close. âBut donât worry, itâll be fine.â
âFine? How can you even think that? They killed your parents. Theyâll not rest until they rid the world of Drakes. You know that, Braeden.â She pointed a shaking finger atAlexia. âGet rid of that woman once and for all. Sheâs nothing but a curse personified.â
Alexia had to hand it to Danielleâher theatrics had greatly improved over the years. Or was it theatrics? Was Danielle going overboard out of guilt? Or to cover her steps. When it came to spells, potions and invading someone elseâs mind, there was no one better than Danielle Drake.
âShe canât stay here, Braeden. Surely you see that. Look at whatâs happened at Mirabilus. Sheâs nothing but trouble. Weâll all end up dying.â Danielle slid a measuring look toward Braeden. Was she baiting him or gauging his reaction?
âYouâre seeing things that arenât there.â Seanâs tone was sharp.
Danielle tore out of Braedenâs embrace to confront Sean. âYou may not have honed your powers, but they do exist. Have you forgotten the things that have happened to this family? The things sheâs done to this family? I havenât. I want her gone. Now.â
âDone.â Alexia opened her car door, then looked at Braeden. âSorry to have bothered
