could do. She straightened the dresser off, placing her toiletries in the top drawer. She refused to have Helen come clean for the room, wanting to take care of everything herself each day. Pulling the bed covers tighter over the comfortable bed, she began to think about what it would be like to have Jake in the bed with her. She had felt his breath caress her, wishing for his kiss. Imagining him in her bed, making love, feeling him as he pushed into her, she…
Lost in her daydreaming, Emma jumped when there was a loud knock. She opened the door, and her breath caught in her throat. Jake looked scrumptious. His hair was still wet from his shower, but mussed as though he had run his hands through it several times. What would it be like to run her own hands through his sandy blond hair? He was wearing a long sleeve, dark green t-shirt that hugged his chest like a molded skin. His jeans were slightly faded and tight enough that she could see his muscled thighs. As her eyes swept downwards, she noticed he was wearing cowboy boots. Damn, he looks good enough to eat, and he’s not interested in me – just my luck.
Jake’s eyes were doing their own feasting. The petite beauty in front of him took his breath away. Her jeans were hugging her curves, her light blue top showed off her shape without revealing too much skin. Her shiny brunette hair was pulled back away from her face, allowing him focus on those deep, dark eyes that lit up when she smiled, as she was now smiling up at him.
“Ready to go, darlin’?” he drawled.
Oh hell yeah, she was ready to go.
Lifting her up into his truck, he leaned over her chest to see that she was buckled, then walked around, and got in himself. They headed out of town, toward the property they were going to look at. Jake glanced over at the beautiful woman sitting next to him.
Wanting to understand her more, he asked, “So tell me about this place. Why are you interested in it?” She was silent for a moment. Jake thought that he may have offended her.
Emma turned towards him in the cab of his truck and took a deep breath. “I grew up in a small row house in the city. It was wonderful because it was home, but it was small with no view outside the windows. There were only three bedrooms, and when Laurie was about two years old, she moved into my bedroom so that when Sarah got in later from work she wouldn’t wake her up. I loved my niece, but sometimes I wished for a little more room. My favorite memories are when mom and I took Laurie and would go to the park to climb trees and run in the grass. After everyone was gone, it was too expensive for just Laurie and me, so I sold it. From the time I was eighteen until she turned eighteen, six years later, we lived in a small apartment over the restaurant where I worked part time. We shared a bedroom again. I love her and would not trade those memories for anything, but now that I can finally settle down, I want to be able to see trees from every window.” She looked down at her hands in her lap. “I suppose that sounds silly, doesn’t it?”
Jake glanced over at her. So much of her life had been changed when her mother and sister were killed. His own life had been unremarkable in comparison. He grew up in a nice house with a big yard with both parents. When he had been in college, getting drunk at frat parties and picking up girls, Emma had been raising a pre-teen, working thirty hours a week, and going to college part time.
“No, I don’t think it sounds silly at all,” he answered. Emma, grateful for his understanding, smiled. He found himself thinking that he would give anything to see that smile all the time.
With that encouragement, Emma continued. “I have been looking online at properties. The houses in town with big yards are too expensive. A couple of houses I looked at have big yards, but a lot of maintenance is required. It looks like the Potter’s place is mostly wooded, private, with a small house. There weren’t
