should defend and advance ourselves by any means necessary. He was one of the reasons I chose to come here. I wanted to see the place where Detroit Red gave his last speech.” He shook his head. “I still can’t believe he’s gone.”
“My heart was broken,” Millie agreed laying her head on his shoulder. “I was so worried about your safety when I found out you were in jail. Black men die in many ways.”
“I was worried too until my wife showed up.” He glanced down at her and smiled.
“That officer knew I was lying the whole time, but once I’d started there was no turning back,” she confessed.
Henry laughed. “I knew Honey was tough from watching her play, but I had no idea.”
“I was going to see you, no matter what. They weren’t going to stop me.”
He placed an arm around her. “Tell me how your practice went tonight. Are you ready for the big game?”
“Practice was okay. The team we’re playing has an ace pitcher. She has a rocket for an arm. We’ve never faced anyone who pitches nearly as fast as her,” Millie told him worriedly.
Henry gently stroked her temple. “If you like, I can practice with you.”
Millie looked up. “You played baseball?”
He nodded. “Yeah, I played for a team back in Mississippi.”
She looked surprised. “Really?”
“I told you baseball was my favorite sport,” he reminded her.
“You don’t mind practicing with me?”
He continued to touch the hair around her hairline. “I want you to win your championship Millie.” Henry lifted her face to his. “I love how Honey rounds those bases then smiles at me in the crowd.”
“I don’t know why I smiled at you. I’ve never done it before,” she said honestly.
“Us country boys are irresistible,” he teased her softly.
Millie stared at him. “Yeah, I think so.”
This time when Henry kissed her, it was neither short nor sweet. This one was long and hot, causing Millie to willingly submit to his loving embrace. Henry slowly tasted her plush lips before letting his tongue discover the recesses of her mouth. He could tell that Honey was innocently sweet which fueled his desire for her.
Millie for her part, was in heaven. Never had she been so lovingly held in a man’s arms and her mouth treated as though it was the most delicious delicacy. Her arms wrapped around his neck as she was gently laid on the bed. Her heart raced frantically as he ended the kiss and stared down into her flushed face, loving stroking her temple.
“I should go now because I have work in the morning,” he told her quietly.
Millie nodded, unable to speak because of the fog in her mind. She wondered what had just happened and what was going to happen going forward with Henry Patterson. Henry read the questions in her pretty eyes and kissed her again until he heard a soft moan come from her throat.
“Millie…”
“Henry…”
He kissed her one last time before getting up from the bed. “Let me go home pretty woman before we get into a world of trouble.”
Millie smiled at him from the bed. “Yes sir.”
Henry crooked a finger at her. “Come on now.”
Millie slowly climbed off the bed and met him at the door. Henry opened it and led her past her sister and niece on the sofa toward the front exit.
“Bye Henry,” Maggie sang, giving him a look.
“Good night Miss Maggie and little Miss Amber,” Henry said on his way to the door.
Millie smirked at her sister as Henry held her hand and they walked out to his car. At the vehicle, he turned to her.
“I’ll pick you up after work to practice,” Henry told her.
“I’ll be ready,”
Henry kissed her forehead. “Good night Millie.”
“Good night Henry.” Millie watched until he drove away before heading back inside. Her sister sat sprawled on the coach while the baby now played on the floor.
“Little Honey’s got herself a man. A fine one too,” her sister taunted.
