part. Thatâs why I got called back. Because what the star says goes.â Nydia raised an eyebrow.
âSo not because you were any good then?â she asked me, turning on her heel and walking off down the corridor.
âNydia!â I called after her. âI canât believe you are being like this!â
âI was better than you,â she said as I caught up with her. âI was better than you, but I didnât get called back because Iâm big and ugly and nobody in the world would believe that a big fat girl was Imogene Grantâs sister!â
âNydia, Iâ¦â I didnât know what to say. I remembered how I felt when I looked at Anne-Marie, so tall and pretty and blonde, sparkling like a diamond when she came out of the audition. I felt like the ugly ducklingthen, and I suppose Nydia must have felt the same since the moment she didnât get called back.
âNydia,â I said, âmaybe youâre right. Maybe it isnât fair. You probably were better than me. And it probably does have something to do with Kensington Heights. Butâwhat could I have done about that? Not gone to the audition? Said, âNo thanks very much, Iâll passâ?â
Nydia shook her head and looked at her feet, sighing heavily.
âIâve got an audition,â she said in a quiet voice. âMs Lighthouse put me forward for it. Itâs for three episodes of Holby City. Itâs a proper part, with lines and everything. A lot of lines actually.â
âNydia! Your first ever speaking part. I bet youâre excited!â I hugged her impulsively, but she didnât hug me back. âThatâs wonderful,â I said, a little less enthusiastically.
âItâs for a morbidly obese teenager with early onset diabetes,â Nydia said miserably. âThatâs all I ever getâfat roles, funny roles, idiot roles. Iâll never be like you or Anne-Marie.â
âNobody will ever be like Anne-Marie!â I said, trying to make a joke and failing.
As Nydia looked up at me her eyes were shining with tears. âNothing ever happens to me, Ruby,â she said.âThings always happen to you. I just wish, I just wish that sometimes things would happen to me.â I picked up her hands.
âI bet you get this part in Holby City, â I said.
âMaybe,â she said. âBut I donât want that part! I want to be an action hero, a romantic lead. But no, Iâm stuck inside this stupid fat ugly body and I canât get out! And Iâm jealous of you. Iâm jealous and angry that no matter how good I am, even when Iâm better than you Iâll never beat you. Iâll never get a part we both go for. Unless itâs the part of a fat ugly person.â
We stood, both of us, in the empty corridor, the bell calling us to class ringing in our ears.
âI donât know what to say,â I said at last as the chimes died away and we were both officially late. âI didnât know how unhappy you were. I thought you were happy with how you looked. Always joking about it.â
âBefore anybody else does,â Nydia said.
âWell, Nydia, if you are unhappy then things donât have to stay the same, they can changeâyou can change. And Iâll help you.â
âHow will you help me?â Nydia asked me.
âWell, you could talk to the school nurse for starters. Ask her about a healthy-eating plan. And maybe she could talk to your mum for you.â
âMum will kill me if she thinks Iâve been talking about her cooking to anyone,â Nydia said.
âBut does your mum know how unhappy you are?â I asked. She shook her head. âI think your mum would kill you if she knew that you had been hiding it from her.â
âYou must think Iâm a greedy fat pig,â Nydia said quietly.
âNydia!â I said. âOf course I donât. I think that you and me
